Just signed up with TCL - waiting on modem and switch over...

Was randomly googling something and came across TCL issues with ISKY
and since I use ISKY alot - for EPL etc - am i going to regret the move??...

Saw the hosts file fix - but since I use different computers alot i dont want to be fiddling with that quite often....

Can someone clarify :)

Related - any there issues with iSKY on telecom BB also?
Trying to watch CNN and it will only play for about 30 seconds then ... Buffering...

This has no been resolved, i have recently been through a debarcle with various people at tcl that has contributed to my switching to telecom (connecting tomorrow!). Both tcl phone helpdesk and email support when questioned put the blame for isky failing on Sky's shoulders. When I asked Sky about this they queried tcl who admitted they were at fault.

That said, there is a partial fix.

Enter those details into your hosts file. It seems to work for most of the channels, but sport 1/2 are still sporadic. Sky won't confirm what the correct urls are either.

Those domain names are wrong - they have changed to:

Well, I think only the sports ones have changed.

Anyway, if you have control over your router, and use dnsmasq for dns, then you cant put this:

address=/.id.velocix.com/60.234.60.196

in your /etc/dnsmasq.conf - will resolve *.id.velocix.com to 60.234.60.196

Then when the domain names inevitably change, you won't be affected. That is what I've done anyway.

Also, I think its hard to place fault here. Telstra's dns and network are causing the video traffic to endure a 200 plus millisecond roundtrip, vs the telecom dns settings which only impose a 20 millisecond round trip.

If this delay is the issue (which it might not be, but for the sake of argument) then telstra /could/ alleviate the issue, but I think the issue rests firmly with the client software - the flash video player embedded in isky's site.

The video player has smarts to detect the speed of your connection and adjust the video quality to the best it thinks you can handle. The video player might not deal nicely with 200 millisecond latency - and it should really, 200 milliseconds is just not that much latency unless you are pwning noobs in the fps de jure.

Anyway, the latency could be a red herring - and perhaps is a sibling symptom to the choppy video symptom, both caused by a third as yet unknown issue, perhaps an issue that telstra are responsible for. It could be on purpose, so that telstra don't provide a service on par with sky and its ISP buddies own service, now where's that tin foil hat gone....
