I'm after a data only plan for my MiFi Christmas, travelling down the west coast of the south island. I generally use 2degrees, but they have basically no coverage, and their roaming data rates are quite high.

I have a year old unopened Vodafone SIM card. Can I pop that into my Mifi and sign up to Smart19 Data? It's not too bad for 500MB. If I need more I can go Freebee Data and get 1GB for $40, or go to Telecom and get 2GB for $50 (assuming they use a standard SIM).

Can the sign up all be done online? The MiFi can't send or receive txts, or make calls.

How old is the unopened pack and is it a prepay pack? Might want to PM me the SIM card number

If prepay it can go on any prepay plan you like and it does not cost to switch between prepay plans but any active addon will be removed

Why not look at the Supa Prepay addon BBPlus $50 2GB

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

The unopened pack is 1-2 years old. I'll find it tonight and PM the SIM thanks. The MiF is a Huawei e585, originally on the 3 network in the UK, but works fine on 2degrees.

Supa Prepay doesn't list BBPlus, or anything with Plus in its name, as far as I can see. The best data pack seems to be $30 for 512MB.

The range of plans is a bit confusing. Why do you need so many plans? They seem designed to confuse.

A one to two years old SIM that was never used is probably disconnected now...

Prepay SIMs that are sold and not activated in X amount of time are deactivated so the numbers can be used agaon

Ah ok. I guess then I'll get another SIM card.

Any idea if that e585 will work on Vodafone?

Now look at the specs on the Vodafone NZ network, You are going to get very limited 3G coverage due to the device not supporting 3G/UMTS 900Mhz

It is a bit old. Maybe I just don't bother with it, I just take advantage of WiFi when I can get hold of it.

Thanks John.

The 2degrees $19data combo has 600MB of national data. http://www.2degreesmobile.co.nz/prepay/pricing/value-packs/19combos

Oh that's interesting, thanks z. It's probably not much good if it's roaming on Vodafone and my device is too old to support the current frequencies.
