I have recently dumped my Vodem for a naked package (no home phone) complete with wireless router; recently Zonealarm has been blocking traffic from 169.254.33.9. Is there something amiss?

I've change the subject to something meaningful.

This address is a reserved address ("link local"). Routers shouldn't be forwarding this from the Internet to your LAN, so it should be something internal.

Check you router configuration - what's the IP address for your router and DHCP?

These are the vodafone defaults, that's why I was worried about thye 169. address didn't appear to be from my lan?!

Seems to be approximately every 30 minutes and from a different Port (increasing numbers)

A 169.254 address is self-assigned by a host when DHCP requests go without response. the subnet is not routed on the wider internet, so it must be coming from your LAN.

try checking your arp cache when packets arrive. that'll help you by at least identifying the hardware address (MAC address) of the offending device. (use "arp -a" in a cmd.exe window).

Did you mean at the time ZoneAlarm notifies? All I can see is:
C:\>arp -a

Interface: 192.168.1.3 --- 0x2
  Internet Address      Physical Address      Type
  192.168.1.1           20-f3-a3-ce-d0-6a     dynamic

Interface: 192.168.1.3 --- 0x2
  Internet Address      Physical Address      Type
  192.168.1.1           20-f3-a3-ce-d0-6a     dynamic
  192.168.1.2           00-12-f0-3a-0b-07     dynamic
