Hi everyone!

I'm new to VOIP I have bought a Cisco 7911 phone and signed on with xnet as my VOIP provider but i'm having a bit of trouble on setting up my phone to work! I have tried reading the Cisco help file but that has just confused me eve more! Any help would be very much appreciated! if you need any info from me to help please let me know what info i need to provide you.

Cisco 7911 phones are designed to be a fully auto provisioned device on a Cisco Call Manager platform. I would never recommend one on a regular SIP platform, and would never recommend one to anybody who knows nothing abot VoIP because they don't even have web based configuration.

My three recommendations would be (in no particular order)

a) buy a better SIP phone
b) ask the person or company you got the phone from whether they can help you
c) pay somebody to come and provision things for you.

Check VoIP-info.org they have config information there. Basically you need to get your dhcp server to configure the Tftp server address ( think this is option 150) that the phone will then goto for the sip software and the config file which you will then populate with your provider settings.

Not particularly simple but should be possible if you have the time to play around.

Otherwise as Sbiddle says get a spa502g spa504g from Trademe, provide xnet with the MAC address and have them auto provision the phone. This will save you what potentially could be a headache.

What SIP phone would you recommend?
Any ideas who and how much it would cost for somebody else to set up?

If you are new to VoIP, I'd strongly recommend going for one of the supported devices for VFX. It's auto provisioned for you (can be reset to factory and used with any provider if sold) which means it's easy, reliable, and just works like any other phone.

As you've no doubt noticed, there are literally hundreds of settings to get right. To get it to the point of being able to make and receive a call is usually fairly simple, but getting it reliable, functioning with NZ standards, as well as secure is far more difficult without significant knowledge.

I have a Linksys SPA922 IP phone working with 2talk, another VOIP provider. I would recommend that phone as I have not had any problems with it. Xnet do have that phone in their list of IP phones and as mentioned above all you have to do is contact Xnet with the mac address of the phone and they will auto provision it for you.
