Hi

I used to previously get approx upto 9 MBit download and up to 900Kps upload speeds. I noticed in the last few days Internet speed tests using TelstraClears own test were showing a maximum of 6-7MBit downloads. Upon checking my DSL modem I noticed the max sync rate is now 7.4Mbit download 500kbps upload

I haven't changed any thing at my home

Does anyone have any ideas why this could have changed ?
Could it be an issue at the exchange or local cabinet ?

Have you done an isolation test?

Just cause you have not changed anything does not mean a lot, You still need to do an isolation test and have you got a master filter installed?

Straight off the TelstraClear page

http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/help/tutorials/using-adsl-filters.cfm
Over time this equipment may deteriorate and become faulty. This can result in your modem losing DSL sync or your phone line gaining a lot of static.

In order to determine what is at fault you can perform an Isolation Test. To do this, unplug everything from every phone jackpoint in your house.

Start by plugging these devices in one by one and testing them to see if the fault is still present.

If the fault is still present there may be an issue with your line. If this is the case call our help desk and talk to one of our technical support specialists.

Summed up, basically you try the modem one each jackpoint with nothing else plugged into any other jackpoint.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers, Josh

Thank you all for your replies

I went to start the isolation tests last night but thought I'd power off and on my dsl modem first, immediately I notice the sync rate was now at 9.5Mbit down/900Kbps up Smile

That said this morning between 6.15am and 7am the performance on the TCL speedtest site was woeful. I was getting between 400Kbps and 2Mbit downloads which was surprising considering the time of day Surprised

I'll do some more testing tonight but that tends to be the busy period...

All of the above said Truenet's stats do reflect the somewhat variable performance I get from TCL DSL esp in the evening

Hi xlinknz. If you're still having issues after the troubleshooting, please log a fault and our technical team will have a look at this for you.

Cheers, Gary

This kind of problems with DSL is, most of the times, related to internal wiring problems. No filters, incorrect filters installed, devices incorrectly plugged in (phone, fax, modem, alarms), corroded wires in the box, etc.

Your first test is to unplug everything you have and plug the modem in the first socket as the wire enters the house. Run the test using ethernet not WiFi.

Post your modem stats here and people will be able to tell you by this information what kind of problem it is.

As for "I'll do some more testing tonight but that tends to be the busy period" I'm pretty sure other people can spare some time reading or watching TV while the problem is pinpointed, right?

Will do [if there is still a problem]

Mauricio, what I meant was that the evening tends to be the busy time on the Internet as opposed to my time i.e. testing download & upload throughput is not ideal to do in the evening due to [for the want of a better word] congestion

Ok... I thought you were saying there were other people in the house using the service and they wouldn't be happy if it went down while testing. Apologies in this case...

Update

I went to start the isolation tests and thought I'd hard reset the modem. Bingo the sync rates came back to the previous figures. That said in addition to that I did have a Wifi issue too but the good news is that I can say that when Ethernet connected that even at peak times TCL are more often that not providing me close to peak [sync] rates throughtput  Smile

Good results. But some advice:

- never do speed tests over wireless
- make sure you have a master filter/splitter installed
