Can you confirm please if the XNet only subdivisions (BOF) are being opened up to other ISP's as of April 2013? I heard through the grapevine that SNAP have indicated that April is the flick of the switch so-to-speak and they will be able to offer services in subdivisions that were previously the exclusive domain of World Exchange's fibre service.

As an aside, I live in one of those subdivisions and I'll be the first to put my hand up and say that I have been totally impressed with the quality of my connection, the quality of service from your staff and very happy overall. The price is still a little steep but I am sure once the competition is in we'll see an increase in the offered speeds, an increase in the data caps with an overall reduction in the prices...here's hoping.

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issued.

intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's

likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular

disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your

line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may sill try to connect so it's worth checking.

Morning Chris yes that is correct, from April BOF will no longer be available and it will be all UFB only,

They are actually different ONT's as well for any change to UFB so will require a swap out at some stage, the current stock of ONT's will run out for BOF around the same time if not sooner, even though the ONT's may look the same they are are actually completely different boxes and we also have to maintain 2 different networks to support both variants, but should be no issues with this,

It also appears that some areas may not have any UFB rsp's offering services at this stage so for some new subdivisions it will be interesting.

We will be moving customers to UFB in the areas that we will look to offer services in the future to migrate them off the BOF network.

Obviously you aren't lateral enough to consider that a service department can handle many issues other than quality of service.

I had dealings with the department purely from an administrative point of view when applying for my connection and some issues around that and found the staff extremely helpful. I was kept fully informed of the process and how that process would evolve and it was delivered on time within the time frame that was set by me and without any problems what so ever.

In addition I did have one small minor noise issue that was resolved within 24 hours with a new modem and great service. I don't regard this as a service issue, rather an equipment issue.

Now go back into your cave and hibernate, the troll seasons over.

The price is set external to WxC due to being BOF and will come in line with UFB offerings when you are switched to UFB. If other ISP's were able to offer BOF then the price would have been the same as with WxC (but they were unable to deliver the service to a suitable quality).

So are we nearing a full UFB offering from WxC outside of these BoF areas anytime soon. Being the pioneer of fibre broadband, I thought WxC would have been amoungst the first to jump on the UFB train?

Pakuranga in Auckland which was first to get ADSL2+ does not even feature on the rollout so it will take more than 3 years for me to get Fibre. The rollout is targeted at schools and businesses. Residential is either new developments or incidental (along the route). Then there was a complaint that uptake is only around 2% with an explanation that it is similar to other countries. If only they did their homework as to where to upgrade, e.g. target areas with overhead copper which should come down anyway and survey the interest in upgrading.

They laid fibre up Reeves road to the school at the top. I have VDSL2 from pakuranga Exchange though :)

The reason we haven't Fraser is that no actual confirmed pricing is known for installs and this is a very serious cost and will reflect the final pricing , everybody is still guessing at what the actual costs will be.

As you know our deployment model works on any access method and fibre it's basically plug and play so there is no concern with deploying this or jumping on the UFB train its just a BAU product for us and its easy from my side of the house, the problem is the commercials it would be easy to jump out and say hey here's 500GB on a 100/50 connection and this will cost every one $80, but the unknown and the risk to a business is what the install costs and rules are going to be, pretty hard to offer a product with pricing when you don't know what the final cost and rules are.

The other issue will be where RSP will actually want to build network to to pick up customers with a very real cost in the equipment handoffs for these when the uptake is going to be real slow.

The average cost also per install for brown fields I believe is around 2.5K ?..... holy crap whose going to keep paying for this Chrous and the other Fibre companies are not going to keep giving it away for free I can tell you that.

So the question is, who pays for that , the Fibre companies , the RSP's or the customer ?
With the margins being so very very low for connections how do you make any money from this if it is the RSP the ROI when adding in an install cost is going to take a large numebr of years to get your money back so this is never going to happen.

These are the commercial realities of UFB, with the costs being unknown then we just have be to careful before committing, but needless to say Fraser we have pioneered FTTH and where its going to be commercially viable we will be there offering the best product available with a true PSTN replacement service, we don't offer cheap and nasty we offer quality.

I know, a disposed "Stanley" knife blade from the tradesmen had cut my near-new tyre and it was almost irreparable. We are in Edgewater area (but towards SE Highway) and are not scheduled for Fibre (according to next 3 years schedule). Meanwhile there is abandoned fibre running down my road, installed 10 years ago and stubs are kicked over. I should have clarified most of Pakuranga is scheduled, but we are not even though we are 1 block away from the town centre.

One of the big uncertainties with UFB is the backhaul. Since the LFC's and Chorus can't provide L2 and L3 services they can't provide this like at present where Chorus can provide RSP's with a tail service at a fixed price. It means RSP's have to interconnect at every peering point to provide service in that area or connect through a 3rd party aggregator such as Kordia. This is why you still have some areas where infrastructure is in place but no RSP's are providing service.

Actual requirements and dimensioning of bandwidth for backhaul also poses some massive challenges and huge uncertainties when it comes to pricing.

IMHO I wouldn't be surprised if we see price increases at the low end of the food chain as time goes on any RSP's get a better picture of true costs. You also have to remember that many wholesale UFB plan prices will be changing between 2014 and 2019 with low price point plans increasing, and higher value products decreasing. Anybody setting pricing now really has to factor this in also.
