I'm looking at signing up to a naked broadband plan with Vodafone. I don't necessarily need a landline but would like to keep our home number and use a VoIP setup instead.

I don't want to use the Vodafone supplied router as I already have a good modem and 802.11ac router, so just wondering what other bit of hardware I'd need to set up a VoIP system, how that fits into the network, and how I go about moving our number to a VoIP provider?

Thanks in advance.

Buy a Cisco ATA such as a 112 if you want to use an analogue phone. Porting is handed by your VoIP provider, but the phone number does need to be active to port it.

I'm using Orcon Genius at the moment, that doesn't count as 'active' does it?

Assuming your router doesn't have a built-in ATA, get yourself something like a Linksys SPA-122 or Linksys PAP2T VoIP ATA. Note there are endless hardware options but these are the ones I can say I've used without issue.

We also use Cisco SPA-303s in our office which is an IP Phone capable to handle 3 SIP lines.

Sign up for VoIP with a provider and port your line over.

Configure your device with the details they give you, plug the device into your existing modem and you're good to go.

As far as I'm aware that counts!

Ok awesome, I thought that an active line was technically one that's working over the copper network.

I've attempted to have my phone numbers ported twice and lost them both times. Worldnet supposedly had trouble with my address for over a month and it got put back in to the pool to be re-used. I then got a horrible number that people said looked more like an overseas number and thought it was a toll call. Then after a horrible year of service with them (but a free ATA adapter) i switched naked bb (to voda) and phone to slingshot/italk. They say they can port numbers too but not a horrible one in the worldnet range it turns out, though this took a good month to get through to someone that could've d understand. I guess getting a new one with them was better in the end though even if people think it's a Botany Downs number (i live on the north shore).

Good luck, maybe just hound the provider after a week or two of no action in case its gets recycled.

Genius is VoIP. You'll need to ensure the port request to your VoIP provider goes through while Genius is still active.

1. Contact a new VoIP provider and request number porting
2. Configure a SIP device to use the new number
3. When number porting is done arrange a new ISP and transfer

I vote for WorldxChange VFX. Get one of their devices and the configuration is automatic.
