I posted about Facebook hanging at static.fbcdn.net. Have finally solved it by installing latest version of Java and uninstalling previous version - seems Java doesn't remove old versions when it updates.  Facebook now fine. So it wasn't a Telstra server problem after all.

Chrome has a built in Java, so I don't really have to worry about this. :)

You should try it, its quite faster then some of the others out there.

How do you enable built-in Java? I can only see the normal Java in my Chrome plug-in list.

As far as I'm aware Facebook doesn't use any Java so you sure that's all you did to solve your problems?

I assume it would be the Facebook games etc.

Hi
All I can say is that reinstalling java fixed the problem on our pc..
maybe it wasnt the direct reason facebook was blocking but it made it work perfectly.

I do note the poor performance is creeping back again so i am at a loss what to do next.

personally i could not give a damm as all other programs work well as well as all internet sites I go to.
It only affects my family.

It's working fine for me now on cable and I certainly haven't touched Java so that wasn't the cause.

Chrome does not have "Built in Java"

Quoting Wikipedia "Java applet support is available in Chrome with Java 6 update 12 and above."

Even Google say if you want it you have to download and install it yourself.

Perhaps Oriphix confused "Java Applet support" with "JavaScript", which is natively supported by Chrome without plugin or extension requirements...
addendum:
just to clarify, a java applet is invoked by a web page but is run on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), a process separate from the web browser, where as javascript is commands within a web page that are interpreted and processed by the web browser directly.
