Wow, I've just got a 3:17am txt message from Vodafone advising me to renew my credit card details!!! They just woke me up to tell me this. How arrogant is that? Naturally, after waking me in the middle of the night to tell me this, there is no chance they will be having my credit card details again. What planet are these guys on regarding customer relations? I use two networks and 2degrees totally blow them out of the water with all aspects of my customer experience: pricing, call centre service and even the look of their modem stick software. Haha

Sure, SMS delivery could have been delayed for a few reasons, but since this was not a specially busy day of the year in terms of special events, most likely this happened because of scheduled routines.

Just to take the flipside here... Presumably you leave your phone on at night, not silent for some reason or another (so you can be contacted?) and then er... complain because you've been contacted?

For an uninterrupted nights sleep... The solution (to me) is obvious...

I had the same problem and emailed Vodafone to complain. Mine was a text advising my smart 25 was due to renew. I received the following reply.

'Regarding your query , I would like to advise that the notification is only sent out when our network detects an active session on that mobile; meaning that someone is using that phone at that time thereby notification is sent.
Now in this case it may be if you are using any smart phone which has an active data session running in the background (may be any application), so even if you were actually not using the phone the network detected the active data session and sent the notification, If you turn off all the data services at night then when the phone is sitting idle no notification will be sent.
If you want you can opt out from receiving notifications by txting STOP to 746.'

I now try to remember to turn off my data connection.

I don't see why they couldn't send the reminders out during business hours, it is after all a business message. Turning off phones isn't always an option especially with elderly parents etc.

The Vodafone texts always come from the same number...
Add them to your contacts - and make them silent...

If you are an iPhone user then use the DND setting and add those that can contact you at night to your favourites...

Really - Don't see the issue...

It's not possible to opt out of the addon reminder SMS that a package is going to renew, We are aware that how it works now is not the best, I work on the platform that fires out the SMS and it's not as easy as it sounds, Trust me we wish it was or we would have done it by now

We are working on a solution to make the experience a lot better and to hold back the SMS till the morning it's part of a much bigger project that we are working on now we also have a thread about this on the Vodafone NZ community

You may not see an issue, but there are others that do.

Thanks John.
Good to know that it's being looked into.

Well, I hadn't used my phone for six hours and there was no active data stream, so the system did not detect activity. I wonder if these messages are deliberately timed to be sent when there is the least traffic on the system? Certainly the SMS notifications can be turned off and I'm sure it's just amounts to a marketing push backed by a false technology argument. 2 Degrees claimed that for a week over six phone calls last year and then it was as simple as one txt message to turn off all data notifications.

If you use a Smart phone always online like iPhone, Android ETC... then these have a call up 24/7 not a voice call but packet switch call, You don't actively need to be using data

No the SMS are not sent when less traffic is on the system not related to traffic load in anyway or form, Packages renew approx 1am to 1:40am in the morning when a audit is done,

No false technology argument either I have worked on the current Prepay platform for approx 3 years and also the SMS kit the same time and I know 100% what is happening and why it happens

Well... You want them during the day - people who work nights may not like that... I mean... Set up your phone to deal with it - then all recipients can be notified when it suits them...

Surely there are bigger issues affecting the world than this?

addon renewal -  I hadn't thought about adding the contact and making the ring tone silent.  Pretty obvious really!  Embarassed

A renewal SMS is not an important/urgent SMS.

Most people who have landlines don't switch it off at night either.
Does that mean they are A-OK with somebody ringing in the middle of the night for something entirely non-urgent?  of course not.

many people leave their phone on at night in case they need to be contacted for some urgent thing or another. maybe they have elderly relatives, family in hospital, or something like that.
