Hello,

Looking at upgrading my smartphone. Last time I purchased a smartphone using the $0 and on a 24 month term I was able to swap alter my plan after 6 months. Do vodafone still do this or are you stuck on the $120 plan for the 24 month duration.

You can swap plans but a fee can be charged

Term plans are generally a poor economy. The penalties to change usually undo most if not all of the benefit of a plan change during the contract, and the savings over 24 months vs going open term are tiny. You then also have to resign, locking you in for another 24 months.

A quick comparison of Vodafone vs. Telecom also seems to suggest you're going to get a pretty poor deal from Vodafone.

Eg.

24m contract with 1GB data, 200mins calling, a bunch of txt (Unlimited on XT, 2500 on VF) and a $400 device subsidy is $59 a month on XT, or $80 a month on Vodafone

This means if you buy a $1000 phone, the total cost over 24 months is $2016 on XT or $2520 on Vodafone - so Vodafone is $504 (or more than $20 a month) more expensive for exactly the same stuff - including $600 up front for the phone in both cases.

Instead, you could by the $1000 phone outright, and put it on Telecom's $59 open term plan which gets you 300 extra minutes a month. The benefit of this is that you can change plans whenever you wanted. Assuming you stayed on a $59 plan for 24 months, the total cost of that over 24 months is $2416 - including the device itself, which is still cheaper than signing on with Vodafone for 24 months!

Shame... thanks for the detailed replies though.

I'm already on contract with vodafone (have been for a long long time) so upping the monthly payment from $40 > $120 for 6 months to 1 year used to be a great option.

Guess have to look at buying outright this time.
