Hi everyone, just taken delivery of the free V3x from vodafone- I know it's had mixed reviews and the vodafone one is tweaked in comparison to the stock model, but it's free and more advanced than my phone, so its still a step up. :D

Anyhow, I have a few questions I hope you guys can help me with:
*The tech specs on the internet indicate it can take a 512Mb chip, but the vodafone shop/DSE/the Motorola call centre say it can take a 1Gb chip. Who is right? I don't want to be under resourced, but then I don't want to be stuck with a slow chip either!

*I read on this forum I think that someone found they had been given a phone that was returned by someone else- they knew this as it still had photos in it from the previous owner. Barring the obvious, anyway I can tell if my one is one of these? Phone looks clean enough, but between buffing and reboxing... I had heard there are phone codes I can use to find this out, but did not have much luck looking in Google.

Any assistance you guys can provide would be much appreciated- thanks!

The Motorola website and 3 technical documents I have found all state 512mb as well. I would stick with this.. However if Motorola's call center has said it will work and It doesn't I'd be very surprised. Maybe if you went this route and it didn't you could play the miss-information card

As for the GSM codes I'm not sure which one you are after.

the used phone scenario mentioned earlier was based on ONE photo.

Scenario: (I have actually done this with a Motorola V3)

Wander into Vodafone and say "can i take a look at a V3?" they pull it out of box, insert battery and power on. The first thing you naturally do is try out the camera... 'click'.

Secondhand phone does one in-store photo not make...

Check the call logs, and text mesages and download histories... if there is 3 calls, some texts, an MMS, and a downloaded game you could reasonably say its a used phone.

1 draft text, and 1 or 2 photos could just be someone checking out the UI.

I always ask for an unopened (sealed if possible) unit when I buy stuff, except from retailers I know personally that charge batteries in advance etc.

That's a good point Tony, and I hadn't thought of that, so thanks!

As for the codes cranz, I was told that apparently there are codes (like the unlock codes I guess) that you can use on your phone to determine things like the amount of time it has been in use for, or I would imagine like Nokia's voice codec codes that 'extend' battery life (by downgrading the quality of speech)- really I'm just wondering what codes there are and whether any will be of use to me, is all!

I have no intention of messing with software (warranties are there for a reason, and I don't wanna risk that), just want to utilise whatever I'll find useful.

Thanks s.joseph, I'll try my luck with the 1 Gb card and see what happens. Now to start buying the go-faster bits! Card, case, headphones...!

The latest Voda firmware is apparently better, All the V3X's may look opened, I have had about 4 "brand spankers" in my hands this week (trying to drebrand with no success) as a result off the offer and all look a bit "handled" but have no calls on the times etc. all boxes have been stackered up a few times and they look it but are still "new phones" I must say the box packing is a bit "throw in the parts and close er up"

The phone seems to have a very good memory card support, Both a 1GB Kingston and Transcend worked fine in it.

Where is yours made out of interest? Singapore or Germany? I have one I'm considering now keeping for myself.

It's made in Germany (checked the inside)- any difference between the two?

Yeah, definitely looked handled- box & packaging was pristing (couriered to me at work), but the wrapping around the phone was not in a good state- air bubbles, coming off around the plug points, etc. Not convincingly 'brand spankers' enough for what's supposedly a $400 phone! lol

Phone looks all good, minor blemish where hinge is, but it's paintwork only- I can live with it! :D Gonna buy a case before I take it out though, then look for the data cable and 1gb card. No idea how Vodafone can justify charging $200 for a card that even DSE are selling at $100, and on trademe for about $30...

The "data cables" are very common for these. Just a standard mini-usb - standard usb cable used on literally every USB device.

often they are obtainable for $10 or less. the cheapest I have seen 1GB microSd cards is $26 at i think PB technologoes or e-one computers.. a funny Chinese shop in manukau,

Thanks for heads up- I'd seen those cables on trademe and DSE at far better prices than the $60 or so quoted by vodafone shop! lol Thinking I'll grab the DSE one, since its a nicer colour lol. Is OEM better than aftermarket? I'm figuring much of a muchness, but pays to ask...

Incidentally, which cards are recommended- adata (used by s.joseph), kingston, transcend etc? Figuring one of these [url]http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=88610548[/url] since I can pick up here in Wellington...

Having said that, I'm basically looking for a data cable, a decent case (pref with belt clip), 1Gb data card, car charger, (might grab hands free kit and headphones later). Are there any decent shops in wellington that sell all of these, and do they do deals?! (I figure if I don't ask, I don't get! :D ). Thanks for your help all of you!

PS paradoxsm, what is the difference between Germany/Singpore made Motorola phones?

Oh, and sorry about trademe link- haven'tyet worked out how to insert weblinks yet! lol

I ask as almost all motorola phones are made by a company in singapore called flextronics..

I have 1 and 1/2 v3x's, one made in singapore and one made in germany.

I have only ever seen 3 phones made in europe (apert from sagems and alcasmells) my 6310i Germany, My Nokia 5110, Finland (prototype), My v3x, Germany!

you should not pay more than $30 for a 1gb SD card, if you do, get them down on price or look elsewhere...
I have a kingston and it's good. My tyranscend seemed to chip apart!

As for cases I think Vodafone branded stores have Krussel for $20, and Digital mobile have Beyond for $20. I prefer the krussel but the beyond is less bulky.

As for data cables, DSE, it's not a "data cable" but just a "usb mini - USB connector, Standard fare for almost all devices

Car chargers, $20 approx

and lastly, Forget trademe, it's a dumping ground for old stock and to milk higher prices from the gullible. I have seen some shockers there in recent times and just laugh.

Second that about trademe, there is some cheaper stuff on there now. I saw a kingston for $27 which seems a nice price. (UI also saw one for $65 lol) remember to factor in postage costs however.

Thanks for that paradoxsm- I will check the cases in vodafone/digital, but I was quoted $40ish... will ask again in the right places this time!

I'll grab the USB cable from DSE (love the way they have the cable and driver for $45-50 as well though!), and download the software from the hellomoto.co.nz. I just called it a data cable as that's what everyone seems to call them- so long as I could plug in my phone to the PC and power it up and transfer information, it's all good! :D

Found a car charger and spare wall charger together on Trademe for not very much- so long as it works and doesn't kill my phone, again, all good- won't be using them that often (car & office), but pays to have them around.

Looking at 1Gb cards on trademe for $27-36, and I can pick it up from 'firstwave' here in Wellie (no postage!), but do you know of any decent online shops or shops in wellie? Figure it's better to go where others have been before... :)- looking again, the $27 one you refer to is the buyer I was referring to earlier! Figure I'll bid...

Hello, just wondering about the chargers you can get for these- now I can buy one from vodofone shop for around $40 (ouch!), or on trademe for about $15 incl p & p. ($20 if I get a wall charger with a car charger too). One for the office and car would come in handy... especially since the battery life on this appears to be appalling!

Thing is, assuming that these are not OEM (lol), will these kill my phone, e.g. power surges etc? Shouldn't think it will be a problem, but always pays to ask...

Also, I saw a desktop charger recently for the v3x- you can mount your phone in it and open it up for video calling, as well as charge another battery at the same time. Problem is, I can't find the link, or remember where I saw it! Can anyone help with this?

I like the phone- learning the texting system was a PITA, but just about got it sussed, even if I think nokias are much better!

Grrr! DSE ordered my Krussel case over two weeks ago now, and still haven't got it in yet! Re-ordered it now...

Asked a question on Trademe re: Motorola HT820- and the one hour I'm away, it gets answered, great deal, and I get pipped- darn it!

Mate getting me a cable for free- excellent, but still waiting three weeks later!

Just one of those days I guess!

http://www.pricespy.co.nz/ is a good place to go if you want to find the best prices on technology. 1GB card should come in at about $20.
