Can I split my digital signal before the box and run the splt into my downstairs tv for free to air channels only??ie 1-4 maori, prime??or does the digital signal come in ecoded from the street?

Yes you can. The digital signal coexists with the analogue on the cable. You will also be able to pick up Saturn weather over analogue assuming your TV can tune into the cable channel frequencies

Just be aware that while this works it's not something endorsed by TCL in any way. Under some circumstances (such as a dodgy TV) it is possible to end up feeding rogue RF signals back into the TCL network which can cause all sorts of interference on the network, primarily effecting cable modems. TCL can track the source of interference and will probably disconnect you if they find it originating from your house. Unfortunately for an end user you have no way of knowing whether you're causing any problems or not.

Actually there is no realy need to split the signal coming out of the box. Since the digital boxes don't filter out the signal on the cable, you could take the signal coming out of the cable and feed it to your other TV to watch the FTA channels. And for the TV near the box, view the output from the composite video outputs on the cable box which will be providing the decrypted channel signal. This also means the other TV can display not only the FTA channels but the one channel currently chosen on the cable box.
