Misplaced my vodafone mobile yesterday and by the sound of a call to it seems to still have charge and is in coverage .. is there any way to find out which cell site it is hooked into?

Sorry but this INFO is not just given out like that and i'm sure a warrant would be required from the NZ Police and a single sector could cover quite a large area

Is it a smart phone? if so  and an android you could remotely install some "find my phone" software, there are a number of different ones to choose from, most will report to an email address with gps co-ords or via a web interface.

All very helpful information (for future) - thanks guys - unfortunately it was a young person's phone with no internet plan .. knowing the cell site would have helped narrow down to the last place/suburb visited but Vodafone are saying no way, kind of surprising when you can provide the pin number etc .. but Vodafone do provide the last call details.

Front line staff do not have access to see what cell / sector the handset would be camping on
