I switched from Trixbox to FreePBX and at some stage in the process have lost the ability to register our WxC trunk.

Asterisk reports
Registration for '99######@pan.wxnz.net' timed out, trying again (Attempt #28)

The 2talk trunk on the same box is working fine.

All the connection details are correct, WxC frontline support said that they are receiving correct 'registration' attempts, and directed me to this forum.

If I set up NAT port redirection on 5060 on the router then the connection works. I don't want to do this due to the increased security risk, and it wasn't necessary before.

This seems like a very similar issue to http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=65&topicid=123449

What is the best way to get this working?

Yea if you run a PBX behind NAT you need to forward the port in my experience. Can't you couple it with a firewall rule to only allow connections from the WxC IP address? That's what I've done... Bring on IPv6 WorldXChange ;)

Up until a few days ago it did work without port forwarding so there must be a way.
Unfortunately with the number of changes made, I'm just not sure what single change caused the problem...

We could lock down the port but that is just one more point of failure to me if I can get it working without NAT forwarding.

Ask WxC to clear all registrations at their end, this sometimes works.

Have you changed your router in anyway? Make sure you have qualify on in your trunk, so your asterisk box will be sending out SIP UDP Traffic every 60 seconds which keeps the nat session alive at your router so incoming call traffic will work.

Actually now I think on it, none of the above should affect the trunk registering anyway port forwarding wont affect registration.

Make sure you can ping pan.wxnz.net and it returns the correct WXC IP, I would actually add an /etc/hosts entry for pan.wxnz.net anyway to avoid any flakey dns issue good practice to avoid DNS problems wherever you can.

Lastly just in case something has got a bit mucked up, I've seen it before in certain scenarios where you've got an incorrect entry which stops the registration and even after correcting it things don't work till you stop attempting to register for a few minutes so try that shut asterisk down, let 2+ minutes go by then start it up again and see if it works.

This is the alternative to waiting a few minutes with asterisk stopped :)

After further reading around, I ended up playing with the network settings on FreePBX, partly because that was one thing I remember touching over the period after which it started failing.

Settings -> Asterisk SIP Settings -> Local Networks
which corresponds to the Asterisk localnet setting

Auto-configure had set it to
192.168.1.0 / 255.255.255.0

By removing the 192.168.1.0, the WxC trunk now successfully registers. The 2talk trunk worked either way.

I still don't understand the issue but maybe this will help someone else.
