The main reason I want to have asterisk is because I have phones in both my workspace and the house, and there is only ethernet between them. Untill vfx will support asterisk, I would have to have 2 ata's registering to the same sip account. Do this on italk and its all ok, will that work with the xnet provisioning system?

No, as the ATA's obtain config from Xnet based on MAC address. It *may* be possible if both the devices have the same MAC, but I doubt it.

Yeah, just had someone tell me they tried calling a few times today to be told that the number didnt exist. Getting a bit beyond a joke really.

italk... and its doing the thing where if i have a softphone running and an ata, the registration for the softphone goes screwey when a call is answered on the ata, and then the call drops when the softphone re-registers. Asterisk is broken at the moment since I rebooted the machine and I havent bothered looking into why. I think its not running from the init.d properly but really I know stuff all about linux. Kinda makes me wish I had pulled some cat-5 out here for phone as well...

Registering twice is probably not a good idea, as registration tells the SIP server what IP to send calls for a specific number to. Usually it re-registers every few minutes, so one minute your ATA will be set to receive calls, then the next minute your soft phone - but probably not both at once.

Were you running Asterisk or Asterisk@Home/Trixbox ?

If you have two ATAs, you could just redirect calls from one to the other .. but you'll have to pay for 2 telephone nos.

One thing that would solve this (and be really cool for others too) is if Xnet were to offer a service where, if someone called your Xnet line, that line *and* a designated other line would ring simultaneously with the call going to the phone that answered first.

Sorta like call forwarding but where both the phone being called and the phone being forwarded to ring at the same time.

This would be real cool in that you could set it up to work with a second Xnet line or your cellphone :) (obviously the cellphone would mean call forwarding charges, same as traditional call forwarding)

Maverick, can I pop this in as a feature request?

Cheers

A

That's pretty much the reason I flagged iTalk away 6 months ago now.  This problem has never happened with VFX and in many other ways it's a far superior product to iTalk.

The ONE feature iTalk has that VFX doesn't (yet) is the ability to view details of the calls you have made online within minutes of making them.  That is in the works according to Phil.

I have two suggestions for you:

1)  Use a cordless phone in your workspace

2)  Standard Ethernet cable has 4 pairs of which only 2 are used.  So long as you aren't running Gigabit Ethernet, there will be 4 wires sitting inside your Ethernet cable doing nothing.  One easy way to get at them is to buy a couple of Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) splitters but instead of feeding power up the DC jack, instead connect it to your phone line.  Do this at both ends of the CAT5 and your problem is solved Smile

Yeah, I was thinking of using the second sets of wires, its just I would have to put sockets on the end and do some re cabling, I may do that as an interim solution, to run the phone back to the house from the garage.

Dect doesn't reach, range on those things is appalling considering I get better range from wifi, not that its good enough to use in the garage from the house.

Strange that it would be said that multiple registrations shouldnt work, because they do just fine if they are all ata or all softphones, calls ring at them all (even if on different internet connections) and once one is answered, and furthur calls will ring the others, and if I call my own number the other ones ring, which is exactly what I would expect to be happening.

Why go to the effort of a PoE adapter? Just buy a cheap RJ45 2 pair splitter and plug your RJ11 patch cords straight into the RJ45 socket. DSE sell (or did sell) a RJ45 phone splitter adapters allowing you to run Ethernet + phone over cat5e.

Good tip, thanks Steve Smile

I didn't know you could get such a thing as an RJ45 splitter.  That would be a quick and easy solution in Richard's case until such time as Maverick can get Simultaneous Ring sorted.

Oh but I have it sorted Grant and it works really really well........there is however a rather large cost involved to supply it in bulk so it would be availbale commercially for customers   :)
