Just as I had predicted Vodafone is coming to party and opening up 4G for prepay customers!

http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/30003143/vodafone-to-offer-4g-on-prepay

At least according to the stuff page ...

I have already bought a prepay sim along (along with a free locked phone that is) ... now the question is when it is coming to Dunedin!

That's fantastic......

Info gets leaked to the media before we even get it on our internal memo system......

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer

A good example of how we get ripped off by Sky without competition.

I wonder if Vodafone will extend the offering to grandfathered plans...

Looking at getting a 4G capable phone soon, but pretty keen on keeping my Smart1 plan and I don't see any better deals from any of the telcos ATM (at least in terms of dollars per GB).

While this is great Vodafone's prepay data offerings are still pretty overpriced compared to 2deg (I'm on $99 for 12gb for 6mo currently), whereas voda charges $30/mo for 1gb..

The official release, with all its... strange wording:

Vodafone gifts free 4G on Prepay to Kiwis for Christmas

Vodafone today announces its Christmas gift to Prepay customers – 4G is available, at no extra cost, from 11 December.

Matt Williams, Vodafone Consumer Director, says: “We’ve seen the way our customers are using the speed of 4G for activities like shopping and streaming music and video on the move. We’re thrilled to make the same super fast experience available to our prepay customers.”

Vodafone offers the largest range of 4G-capable devices at a range of price points – 27 now, including the recently launched Apple iPhone 5s, Apple iPhone 5c and Vodafone Pocket WiFi R215.

Kiwis wanting to experience the speed of 4G will need a 4G-capable device with the latest software, and be in a 4G coverage area. And Vodafone Prepay customers don’t need to SIM-swap to access 4G – they simply reply “YES” to a TXT notification message to be upgraded to a 4G-capable plan.

The device seamlessly switches to Vodafone’s next fastest 3G speeds when customers leave the 4G coverage area.

“We’re making it simple and easy for our Prepay customers to use Vodafone 4G,” Matt continues.

Vodafone’s 4G network is now well-established, with broad national coverage available to over 1.3 million Kiwis across 12 locations: Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Wanaka, Lake Brunner, Taupo, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Arrowtown and parts of the Coromandel.

Wonder what pushed Vodafone into allowing LTE on prepay ??

" they simply reply “YES” to a TXT notification message to be upgraded to a 4G-capable plan."

So which plans are 4G capable? And how good are they compared to the plans customers are on now?

it's the right thing to do on so many fronts - business (aka competition), freeing up some 3g bandwidth, people will use and buy more data, it's a no brainer

so I just checked the 4g coverage map -

Lake Brunner and Te Anau has 4G! Yay!

I'm guessing Hanmer Springs will be next.

Dunedin ... meh who needs 4G here ... ??

4G coverage map was updated approx 2 weeks ago and it's already quite a bit out of date with new locations / towns that have 4G live now
