I am trying to use SHARP GX17 mobile as a GPRS modem for Sony Clie TJ25. I could not find recommended connection instructions and used this one:

Send at+cgdcont=1,"ip","www.vodafone.co.nz"
Send cr
Delay 1
Send atd**99***1#
Send cr
Wait for CONNECT
Send cr
End

It looks like I am getting CONNECT, but the last message in the log is LCP Timeout.

Could you please give me an idea about what I am doing wrong?

Thank you very much.

It all looks correct, except that the Vodafone APN to use is 'www.vodafone.net.nz' and not 'www.vodafone.co.nz'.

ahhh, interesting, I was led to believe that these could not be used as GPRS modems!

You were quite wrongly misinformed.

Does anyone know if the GX15 can be? I have both but the GX15 is a much nicer casing. or could I swap the innards?

As far as I understand, if a mobile phone has all set for connection like GPRS & IR/BT - there should be a way to use it as a modem. The exception was my old Sony Erricson i200, but the manual did not say that it could be used as a modem.

Except when the OS or firmware is crippled - there are some handsets which can not be used at all.

http://www.sharp-phone.com/country/downloads/downloads.php?country=NZ⟨=en&product=GX15

has " Modem Driver for GX15"

Also please read page 106 of the user manual. It looks like the same as for GX17 one.

So, I think you can configure it.
