I am looking at getting the wife a new iPhone for Christmas (she has a 4, but complains it is slow on IOS7 - I agree).

I will be getting it on a contract through my father's business (they have a great corporate deal with Vodafone). Obviously, she would like to keep her existing number.

iPhone4 has a micro-sim, new iphones have a Nano.

She is currently on Telecom, I am looking at porting her back to Vodafone (she has an 021 number).

What would be the best way to do this, so that she doesn't lose connectivity with family on Christmas day?
Way I see it happening, I will get new phone and new sim with new number this week sometime.

Will I be able to call anyone at Vodafone on Xmas day (or Xmas eve I suppose) and port her existing number away from telecom and onto her new Vodafone plan?

Or, will she just have to look at her new phone (or use it with some unknown number) for a couple of days until I can talk to someone at Vodafone?

I would get the phone, have her use it on WiFi for a day or two, then port the number to it when she needs it less in a few days. Just get a blank SIM from a Vodafone store and they can do it for you on the phone.

I called and asked a similar question last week, moving my partner to a new Vodafone phone. They said just get a blank SIM from the Vodafone store and call them up.

Hi there

I'd suggest porting the number over to Vodafone asap, and have it go on to a micro sim temporarily to use in the current phone until Christmas day, and pick up a blank nano sim from a Vodafone store so you're ready. Then contact 777 on Christmas day and we'll swap the connection to the nano sim.

There's a few different options for the order of the steps. I guess it depends on how much of a surprise you'd like it to be vs. getting it all up and running on a public holiday! :)

Thanks

Dylan

Porting takes up to 24 hours so could be a long process, Add to this the number of other people doing the same thing on xmas day and you could be looking at a fair bit of mucking around on hold and waiting for number to port etc. My suggestion would be to do it before or after xmas day.

My opinions are purely my own and are not at all those of my employer 2degrees.

OK thanks all.

Looks like I will get the number ported first (on her old phone), than do the simswap later (hopefully can get it done xmas day).

I should hear back from Vodafone today about progress on the new contract.

Pretty sure number ports only happen business days, so the earliest would be the 27th.

But I imagine the porting teams are running skeleton staff during that week, and it may take longer.

I'm sure mobile is different, but my VoIP provider (2talk) have said no (fixed line) number ports will happen between 18 Dec and 7 Jan.

Thats a LONG time for a port....

AFAIK the slow end is always the loosing service provider,
every port that I have done takes about 2 hours unless the LSP takes ages to respond

Could always do a SIM swap on the sly and use an Micro/Nano adaptor.

Sim adapters are a great idea and definitely handy to have around for situations like this. I carry them with me all the time just in case I need to "test" a new phone. ;)

I might be telling you how to suck eggs here, but it's worth mentioning - PLEASE never put an empty sim adapter in a phone. They can get caught on the pins that contact the sim card and be damaged when pulling it out. I've seen a few phones broken that way.

Oh thanks, Where would I get a sim adaptor? That is a good idea.

We should have them in most Vodafone stores as well.
