No Vodafone broadband here in Tawa, Wellington for about an hour (at least that's when we noticed it. Looking at their website  there's no mention of any problems, nor is there on their Facebook page. However, ringing the 0508 888 800 number and pressing the button for technical support gives a message which says customers in the 03, 04 and 06 calling areas may be experiencing problems.

"May" is a bit of a loose term. I wonder how many others out there are actually experiencing problems and why VFNZ aren't posting any information about it anywhere. Pretty poor communication from a communications company!

I gather you're talking DSL services? Cable broadband working ok in Johnsonville.

Fine in Hawke's Bay on ADSL. Fine in Lower Hutt on Cable.

i have quite a few VF ADSL connections down in Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Queensgate, Nelson etc for various customers so there obviously is a issue.

they all seem to have DSL AND PPP synced, but there is no actual internet connectivity

Good one Vodafone!  those are all retail stores so all have lost eftpos, i am sure the staff is going to be super happy doing zip zap sales on boxing day

Seeing as they depend on internet for a core business function, surely they can transition to a backup connection?

You make a good point, you'd think they would all have a backup 3G connection just in case, but they seldom do. Guess they will next year :)

But Dan you're right, staff won't be impressed, I had to do it many years ago when I worked in retail and it sucked!

Quite right to a couple of posters - my bad and topic headline updated. ADSL is the problem.

Was initially concerned about the potential scope given the area codes quoted cover such a vast area of the country. Very good point RunningMan!

the current VF situation is they don't know where the fault is, and don't know any ETA for repair, according to their business helpdesk anyway.

its always nice for people to blame the customer for not having backup internet connection, reality is, sometimes companies don't have the money to pay for things that essentially sit there and do nothing 99.9% of the year. these are small business's not large retail chains who are often struggling to keep going/pay the bills

However, they do actually have a couple 3G sticks they use for spares, if a stores internet is likely to be down for a while,  but this doesn't help when a large amount of stores that a geographically a large distance away are all down at exactly the same time.

their main backup is the eftpos system allows for offline transactions to a previously agreed amount, at the banks risk, not sure what is it i think its around 1000$ or so per store, but that wouldn't last long on a day like boxing day, after that its on to zip zaps until the net is backup

It's not usually a good idea to run your business on a connection which is supplied on a "best effort" basis when it's so reliant on said connection.

The cost excuse is really just a load of rubbish. The real reason is people who simply don't factor in redundancy or simply don't know about options.

You could buy in a 3G stick for failover with 50MB per month for $6 per month. That's peanuts when it will offer you the ability to keep your EFTPOS and internet going during an outage. Or just put in a 2degrees SIM and pay 50c MB only when it's needed - if your internet never goes down it'll cost you the grand total of $0 per month. If your internet fails it might cost you $50 - but is that better than having to shut up shop?

I know a number of places that all use the Telecom 10c per MB plan for 3G failover, it's a shame that plan is now history.

Got home at 2pm and teh interwebs are all good again. So, a relatively short lived outage here and hopefully the same for everyone else. Wonder if anyone's ever tried calculating the economic cost of an outage like this?

I manage 2 family businesses. Both businesses each have 2 EFTPOS over IP machines via Vodafone broadband connections. I kept 1 POTS line in each business for 1 of the EFTPOS over IP machines in case the internet goes down (which it does maybe once or twice a year for short period of time due to whatever outage there might be). The EFTPOS machines still continue to work thanks to the POTS line (slow but it's real time accept/decline).

Businesses just need to be smart with their redundancy option or know someone that can guide them.
