Moving down to Wellington shortly, on the weekend i booked for  cable, phoneline and vodafone tv install for the 21st January, got a call today to say that the earliest they could do was 27th January, what a waste of my week off work to move house and get everything sorted etc.

How long is the wait for this normally? What is the procedure for installing cable? Is the onsite install a physical setup for all 3 services, or just plugging in the modem and vodafone tv box? (Pretty sure the house already has a cable connection overhead - 2 jackpoints in the lounge)

I am coming from Auckland and purely ADSL experience so not sure what the procedure is for Vodafone cable these days.

Hey there,

 The installation process differs house-to-house. Cable jacks are deactivated to prevent feedback into the network when services at a property are disconnected, so a technician does need to liven each one that will be in use when new services are installed. The technican needs to connect each piece of equipment - set top box(es) & modem(s) need to be screwed into the wall, tested, & signal strength needs to be checked - as well as put in additional cable jacks if the existing ones aren't in an ideal spot for the customer's usage (e.g. TV in a different place in the lounge). They'll also need to check the internal wiring for the phone jacks, the cable box on the outside of the house, & the integrity of the cabling to the house (aerial or underground) if it has been a while since the property was connected to the network.

If it has never been connected to the network before, external cabling will be required, and in some cases additional cabling work is required if the new customer is getting more services than the previous customer had into the premises. In ideal, 'intact' scenarios, the turnaround is roughly 30mins to an hour per service being installed, e.g. 1.5-3hrs for phoneline/TV/cable broadband.
