So after a couple of weeks my VDSL has settled around 27.5 down and 3.2 up.
Been away a few days and checked it when I got home today - down to 19.1 and 2.2.
Is that level of change normal?

Possible - weather has changed from the warm dry weather of the past few weeks. How does weather affect it though?

Cbfd: Sounds like your still on the adsl2 profile and havnt been moved to a vdsl profile to get your sync speed
Canuckabroad: DLM seems to be the explanation for everything, even when it doesn't make logical sense.
I was set up on Vodafone VDSL yesterday around noon. My modem is connecting a 30Meg down and 10Meg up, but SpeedTest.net using Vodafone's server gives me between 9-11Meg down and 0.8 up - which was exactly what I was getting with ADSL from a different provider.
I'm a little disappointed abour the theoretical connection - I am across the street from the cabinet, my noise and impedance values are very good - so my wiring should be fine - and I was hoping for more than 30Meg down. I'm REALLY disappointed that for actual performance, there is 0 difference so far between ADSL and VDSL.
I did speak with tech support yesterday, who told me that it must just be DLM, although they put a note on my file that my test results were sub-par. I'm not sure I'm happy to wait 10 days before I go back to identify that somebody has missed something - it's just not reasonable to expect that I'm getting less than 10% of the upload speed that I should, and that the system will dynamically tune for 1000% improvement over what I now have.

line stats? unless you had a good line (which 9-11mbit before VDSL infers not.) 30Mbit might be the best you will manage.
