Back in the pre-history it was possible to send an email to 6421xxxxxxxx@sms.vodafone.net and have that fwded onto your phone as an SMS.  I'm pretty sure this died horribly sometime around 2010.

I am just running a long script here and would like to know when it's done.  I can easily script up an email to be sent at the end of it, but I get a lot of mail to my phone, and that would get lost in the mess.  A SMS would be better.  Is there a way to do this now, or am I out of luck?

I would think you could maybe do something like send an email, then set the email to SMS to your phone using something like IFTTT

https://ifttt.com/connect/email/sms

Or use some other sort of IFTTT rule set up with SMS might work

Waves fist.. damn you johnr. (but thanks for confirming it's status)

So there isn't a replacement of any kind, or a way to send small volumes of SMSs from arbitrary sources?

Yeah I was looking at setting up some sort of IFTTT style Rube Goldberg machine as a worst case.    From memory there is a polling lag with a bunch of the IFTTT stuff.  But 15min late + actually getting my attention is probably better than on time, but not getting my attention for hours.

Looked good*, but they literally won't take my money. Their credit card payment link is broken.

*actually the overuse of bad stock photos looks terrible. But the mechanics are exactly what I was looking for.
