This may be a general internet question rather than a specific VF one but since VF is my provider, I posted here. No doubt someone will move it if need be.

Recently (last 4 days or so) I have noticed a tendency for the internet to 'stall' when I click on links, search results etc.

What I mean by this is that the address bar entry changes and the blue 'progress' bar loads about half way and then stops.

If I click the 'stop loading' icon and then the 'reload page' icon, it usually loads just fine second time around.

Any idea why?!

Are you using Telecom's own DNS? Do you have a proxy in your LAN? Is this on a new connection or existing? Have you tried restarting PC and routers?

1) DNS as set out of the box by VF when delivered AFAIK
2) Don't know what that is, so probably not!

I asked about Telecom DNS because your topic was originally posted in the Telecom forum. Moved it now.

Vodafone does use a transparent proxy. It sometimes has problems with international traffic. If you use a VPN and all work fine then it's likely their proxy, which at some point will get back on the game... 

I assume you're in AKL therefore using DSL?

Sorry - my bad - meant to put that in the VF one. Must be going blind!

No, I am in rural South Wairarapa, about 80km NE of Wellington on VDSL.

I don't have a VPN I don't think. Is that one of those trick things that makes you look like you are in the US or something?

I have noticed this since the last Safari update last week. I cleared all the caches etc for Safari and it seemed to speed it up, but still bogs occasionally. I using Chrome more right now due to this.

The DNS is set by DHCP when you get your IP address. You can try our alternate ones found on the website:

 

     

  • Preferred DNS server: 203.109.129.67
  • Alternate DNS server: 203.109.129.68

Just happened to be reading something the other day that says that Chrome no longer does a real-time check for SSL certificate revocation which means that, if Safari still does, this might speed things up if places like Verisign etc. are running slow. (Which I imagine they might be lately as there will be a lot of certificate revocations etc. happening)

I was listening to something this morning. Safari doesn't unless it's an EV Cert, and it's actually quite difficult to enable unless you know how to. Involves going into the keychain and holding the option key while checking a box. (~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.security.revocation.plist)
Chrome actually gets a list from Google when doing updates. Use the settings and check the box to check every time. Will check EV.
By default, Firefox validates a certificate if the certificate provides an OCSP server. Or you can enable like chrome. Will check EV.
Opera and IE (strangely) do check by default.

Hamilton Vodafone user and professional tecchie here. Me and a friend across town have both noticed this stalling behavior happen simultaneously.  Seems to be happening in the evening around 6-8pm

I have also had to set a number of my customers DNS settings to Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) to get any life out of their connections, all of them are Vodafone/TelstraClear users.

G’day

Been happening to me intermittently for some months now.

Happens in both Safari and Firefox when I’m connected via 3/4G using a Vodafone R212.

Problem diasppears completely when I use a 2 Degrees MiFi instead.

I am in South Wairarapa and have found that the page loading is delayed more than usual.
I use Firefox and when it occurred I also tried IE but the same slow load was experienced.

I have been with Maxnet's unlimited ADSL plan for more than 2 years only just moving to Orcon's unlimited net on the 2nd of this month.
I had quite a lot of trouble with their supplied router which could not synch as well as my own router.
They sent out a new router thinking the first refurbished one was faulty but it wasn't, had exactly the same problem.

I kept harassing them to let me use my own router but the techies said I couldn't. It was only after threatening to leave they suggested I contact the retention team who informed me I could in fact use my own router for which they gave me a specific password to connect with.

It would synch at an expected up rate but could not sych at the expected down rate by 1mbps. Thought I would leave it.

I honestly thought the problems with web pages lagging out was this new ISP connection but then saw your post here.

I also thought that it was issues with Firefox which seems to come right if I clear the cache, but the problem with long wait times to connect to a web page continues.
Over the last few nights between 10pm and midnight was the worst I have experienced in a long time.
I performed a speed test where typical for me is 40ms ping, 11.70mbps Dn .90mbps up.  When it was playing up the ping was 175ms 2mbps Dn .79 up.

I regret changing to Orcon because now I am thinking it's congestion causing these stats and issues with web page loading delays but if others on different ISP's in this area are experiencing this issue perhaps it's something else.
