Hi

I am upgrading from old telstraclear 40gb plan using a Motorola Surfboard.. to new ultrafast 80gb plan..

So they are installing the new modem/router.. will this new router play nicely with Airport Extreme?

I currently have
- Motorola Surfboard
- linksys router
- airport extreme

I would prefer to just have
- new modem/router for Ultrafast
- airport extreme

Will that work?

Standard install would work like: Cisco modem > Router > Airport. Hopefully someone who has used an Airport with the cable can comment but i believe there are specific settings that need to be entered. Not VLAN tagging though. The router has to handle DHCP too.

I'm not sure why you use a Linksys router now. That just creates double NAT.

You should just have your airport plugged directly into the cable modem.

The Motorola Surfboard is a bridge.

The new Cisco cable modem for Ultrafast is also a bridge. Not a router. So, it's NOT the equivalent of the Surfboard + Linksys rolled into one.

BUT, why are you even using the Linksys?

If you want to, you can plug the Airport Extreme into the cable modem. Configure it with the static IP address you are given (the same one as before by the way) and away you go. (My mum-in-law has this setup, works fine).

If you are using the functionality of the Linksys (it does have GigE interfaces I hope) as well as the Airport Extreme, then the new Cisco won't replace it. It's not a router, it's a bridge, just like the Surfboard—only faster.

That thread, from 2008, listed the Apple Airport Extreme (AAE) as problematic because of dropouts. It didn't link the problems to the Surfboard + AAE combination, but to just the AAE. I asked (when the thread got bumped in 2010) what model and firmware of AAE, because the poor experience is not universal.

If you have been using the AAE in the configuration you described, behind the Linksys, without problems, then I would imagine that it would work right now perfectly well if directly connected.
