I wonder if we would need to "unbundle" Vodafone too, seeing that their "low land-to-mobile calls" is actually only with their own IHUG service:

Vodafone first to lower land-to-mobile calls
Following the government’s reduction of mobile termination rates, Vodafone is the first telecommunications provider to act by lowering the price of landline calls to mobile for its ihug home phone customers.

From July 1, ihug customers have been making calls from their home phones to mobiles at a new low price of 39 cents per minute, one of the cheapest rates in New Zealand.

“Vodafone was already offering businesses the lowest land to mobile rate available with their new business rate calling plan, but for consumers this is now the cheapest, most widely available price,” says ihug’s chief executive Mark Rushworth.

Rushworth says, unlike offerings from other providers, the new price is for calls to all mobile networks and doesn’t require customers to be on a special plan.

“Any customer who has ihug home phone with one of ihug’s latest calling plans gets this cheap rate.  So our existing customers will see a price drop of between 13% and 20%, depending on which calling plan they were previously on.

“Vodafone has committed to reducing the price of landline to mobile calling in New Zealand and to passing those savings on to customers - this is just the first example of that commitment,” says Rushworth.

The new price compares with 49 cents per minute from Orcon, up to 71 cents per minute from TelstraClear and up to 71 cents per minute from Telecom.

It's a bit hypocritical of Vodafone to be charging more than other a lot of other telcos and be claiming it's "one of the cheapest rates in New Zealand". Vodafone are complaining on one hand that telco's aren't dropping their landline to mobile rates yet have come up with a very uncompetitive rate and are even charging their home users more than business users.

Anybody paying more than 30c per minute for landline to mobile calls in NZ is being ripped off.

You've missed the point, Mauricio...

these are FIXED LINE calls to MOBILE numbers... Vodafone can't control what other fixed-line companies charge for these calls, just what Ihug charges.

Actually, that's the whole point of the mobile termination rate argument - these are the charges mobile carriers make fixed line carriers pay. When they are reduced, the fixed line carriers do NOT have to pass the savings on to customers unless they're forced to.

Vodafone's commercial offer to the government over MTRs offered to do exactly that - reduce at a rate we're comfortable with and we'll ensure the pass through to customers takes place. The Commerce Commission regulated response had no such pass through built in - meaning the money would have passed directly to the fixed line carriers and the decision on passing it on to customers would be left for them to make.

That swayed the minister who made the call that he would accept the commercial offer over the regulated offer.

Incidentally, the cheapest landline to mobile calls in the country are from ... Vodafone. Business customers on the Vodafone At Work Tolls package pay only 15 cents per minute to call a VODAFONE mobile.

Blatent commercial plug, OFF.

Cheers

Paul

No, I didn't miss the point. The subject is "cheaper calls from IHUG phones to mobile". And yes, I comment that's only with Vodafone's own services.

According to the 'Decision on Mobile Termination Rates' published by Trevor Mallard. Telecom are reducing the rate to 12cpm and Vodafone to 14cpm over the next 5 years.

According to my quick calculation that would make the Voda rate more expensive. So, Telecom will be paying Voda 2cpm more than Voda will be paying Telecom for terminating calls.

In the weekend just gone I paid $1 to call my mate on 027 from my Telecom land-line and we spoke for 45 minutes.

I am sure that both of ihugs land-line customers will be very happy with the deal.

39c isn't really the cheapest. Xnet Tolls offers 35c to Vodafone mobiles and 39c to Telecom mobiles. Xnet VFX offers an even cheaper 30c to any NZ mobile. So does Slingshot's Italk.

Paul, if you are going to have a "commercial plug" then please get your facts straight. The 15c per minute is ONLY for calls to Vodafone mobiles for the @Work plan - for calls to Telecom mobiles it is still 30c. Yes the calls may be cheaper, but please don't mislead people in your plug. There are enough complaints about Vodafone being misleading in these forums already!

For the record, the pricing can be found on the Vodafone website.

Gah! You're quite right - my apologies.... my misreading of a page of information. I'll correct the original, if one of the editors doesn't want to do it first... That'll teach me for being commercial.

Cheers

Paul

....

Not quite new (anytime plus rates)..Wasn't the term 'leaders, not followers'?

Now let's be completely honest and add in the higher monthly access fee to get Anytime Plus rates, which at my location is an additional $15.60 per month...

What was that about leaders again?

Regardless, the rate is still there (along with capped calling as well). If you were wanting cheap line + cheap voda calls, look at a VOIP solution if you don't need a physical landline.

Those who want to pay 39c per minute can do so using Kia Ora cards, available from their local dairy.  Discounts are sometimes available, ie top the card up by credit card and get 10 or 20% off.  I'm sure there are cheaper offers than this, usually they have a per call surcharge as well.  No need to be a direct dialing customer with xyz company!  Also, national calls are 3.9c per min, about 1/5 of Telecoms charges.

Anytime rate $2.50 for 120 minutes = $0.020833
Anytime plus rate: $2 for 120 minutes = $0.016667

But the per minute charge of the above plans for national calls is 18c & 14c respectively, nowhere near 3.9c. The numbers above assume every call will last two hours, which seems unlikely. The numbers above also don't factor in the $15.60 a month more TNZ would charge me to access those rates, which also needs to be included to calculate a true per minute cost.
