I don't know why I'm having problems but I can't get a WAP to work with a new TC connection that was installed yesterday.

I first tried an Actiontec cable/dsl router and set up the WAN address, subnet mask, and gateway as provided by TC.  But I can't get outside.  Obviously I can reach the admin screens on the WAP.  I was using this device for years before on a TC cable.

So, now I have purchased a Gigabyte Aircruiser BR02G, and still can't connect Cry  I can setup the WAN settings, and have left the LAN settings unchanged.

I can't ping TC's dns servers, but on my Telecom adsl connection ( which I plan to disconnect as soon as I get this TC cable working ), things work fine, and I can ping TC at 203.96.152.4

If you configure your PC with the WAN settings and connect directly to the cable modem do you connect.

Yes, that works.  Which is why I am so puzzled.

Gateway address should end in a .1. Try pinging gateway rather than DNS address.

Does the router have a WAN led that is lit to indicate connection with cable modem? Does router status page indicate that any packets are flowing between router and cable modem, i.e., on router WAN interface?? If not swap patch lead between router and modem.

If I pull the cable from the modem to the router, the WAN light goes off, and a message appears in the admin screens to say that there is not broadband connection.

The WAN status also indicates that there are packets being exchanged on the WAN side!

And I have tried different cables as well as a cross over connector between the modem and router.

I'm beginning to think Telstraclear have altered their network recently to cause this problem.

I didn't mention it before but I also have tried to connect 3 Linksys WRTP54Gs to their network and only one of them worked .. for a month before stopping.  I upgraded the firmware, but was unable to ping ( using the internal ping on the router ) outside.

I have returned all three WRTP54Gs, but still have another one that is working flawlessly - I'm afraid to move it to try on my other network in case it falls over as well!

So you tried clone MAC address to give WAN interface on router the computer's ethernet interface MAC address (I simply can't remember as to whether this is relevant).

Not yet .. but I shall.

This should only be relevant if TC are registering the Mac address of my Pc's NIC to restrict the sharing of broadband, and as far as I know, they are not.

I don't know what TC did, but I connected up the Gigabyte router today and it worked straight away!

Now to try my Actiontec router.

Actiontec router is also now working!

I think the essential step I missed on Friday when I tried this was that you need to power off the Motorola Surfboard each time you change the router attached to it.  Otherwise nothing works!
