I'm on what used to Telsta Cable at home and that's where I work from. I want more bandwidth primarily for chugging big backups to cloud storage.

I've currently got 80Gb/Month.

When I went to look at options I notice that [a] I can't buy any more capacity other than unlimited and [b] unlimited is "residential only".

Elsewhere on Geekzone I saw "residential" described as "not reselling" - well I'm certainly not going to be doing that but most of my bandwidth gets used for work stuff which I presume is not considered "residential" either.

My problem is - how can i get more bandwidth without changing suppliers or pretending I'm residential use only ?

Phone Vodafone and find out what your real options are. I know some other ISPs have unlimited business plans so Vodafone probably have a solution already. There must be many people working over their residential connections.

You don't tell us but are you wanting to keep residential features like the free TV recorder. If not then you could move to a business plan with a higher cap.

It's not just reselling as Vodafone says:
Unlimited Broadband - Terms
Terms and Conditions

 

  • Unlimited broadband is to be used for standard residential use only and is not to be used for commercial types of activity or purposes
  • Non-residential, commercial purposes will include (but is not limited to) selling bandwidth to third parties or running an Internet Service Provider.

I don't think "working from home" qualifies as business - I think the clause is there to make sure that if you have a downtime you can't come back later crying "I work from home! This is essential! Vodafone should fix this just about right now!"

Agreed - from the gist I had of other discussions, it pretty much came down to if you are "reselling", through to if you are running a web server for commercial gain, for example, etc.

Hey folks,

 That disclaimer is there in part because there is no fair use policy for unlimited cable, so there is potential for abuse, e.g. selling bandwidth to neighbours. As long as you're not making money by re-selling the service/operating as a fun-size ISP - This being different from splitting the bill with flatmates - you're good to go. Working from home is definitely a BAU residential purpose! :)

Thanks to all of you for advice, much appreciated.

Got on the phone to sign up for 'Naked Broadband Unlimited' and then discovered I can only do so by committing for twelve months . Not impressed . 

Now shopping around (any suggestions ?) as I might as well compare packages from other suppliers if they're going to start talking contracts ... only been a customer of theirs since 2002 so I can see why they might want to dick me around.

You want to leave cable and switch back to ADSL/VDSL? (Unless you can get Fibre of course)  Personally there's no way I'd take that downgrade :)

I asked about upgrade to unlimited a couple of weeks ago and decided not to as was told 12 month contract applies, the CS did not mention open contract at all, but the cost of modem you may as well have a 12 month contract anyway, so will just stay on 60GB for a while I think.

you even get a NetComm N300 NF5 WiFi /VoIP / Gigabit router when you upgrade, just had mine done today. and ive been a customer since 128k in christchurch and im in for the 12month as well contract also. i dont get the Early Disconnect fee really as the equipment is vodafone's, its like the city council asking you to stay living at your house when they change light bulbs in the street. any who ill still be here for a year, so no biggie.
