I was wondering if Vodafone has measures in place to protect itself from DNS amplification attacks similar to what seemed to affect Spark customers recently?

I have noticed that a server in the USA can happily use Vodafone's DNS servers, which seems very strange, because I would have thought that Vodafone should only be allowing DNS access to their customers. Not to the public.

Also does Vodafone block port 53 access on inbound connections to their customers, to prevent attackers relaying requests through hacked or poorly setup routers?

Surely you could answer part of the question without giving out security details....

Surely a question like "I was wondering if Vodafone has measures in place to protect itself from DNS amplification attacks similar to what seemed to affect Spark customers recently?" is fine...

Or you just grandstanding?

Isnt it in VF's customers interests to know if your network has the security built in to avoid what happened to Spark?

After all its your customers that are paying you and your Company.

Vodafone went down last night, and my first thought was "oh great, Sparks passed on the issue to V/fone" ;)

We take the security of our customers very seriously and will always take all necessary precautions to prevent internet attacks to the best of our ability. As John mentioned, we can not be discussing our network security here, sorry about that. I personally empathise with our colleagues at Spark and don't think there is anything to be gained by comparing the two networks under the circumstances.

I had huge DNS issues last night, Vodafone DNS, ETC.

Yeah, was driving me up the wall, was in middle ordering my new PC :) Had to keep restarting the order.... gave up in the end and went and watched a movie instead.

Mine tanked about 2030, but was back 25mins later.  That was enough for me to stop watching crap on youtube and go and actually talk to me family.  Weird feeling doing that!!!!

What Spark experienced wasn't something that is unique to Spark - it could happen to any provider out there but it just so happened to be Spark as the target of the recent attack. All networks go through their own 'issues' so if there is an attempt to find a provider that never have problems then you'll never find that infallible provider - these things happen. Clean up the mess, learn and then move on.
