Hey guys,

I got an iPhone about 22 months ago and the charge cable is no longer working. I believe under the Consumer Guarantees Act this should be replaced by Vodafone, correct?

Thanks,

Much like a battery I would consider the charging cable to be an item that would be the customers responsibility.

I've always just bought my own...they're a consumable.

Technically you're probably correct, but I suggest just buying one as they're so cheap.

At the cost of genuine cables, I'd definitely expect at least 2 years life out of one.  You should get them to replace it.  Apple cables are notorious for failing early.

I have 3 official cables, 2 of which are faulty. 1 was from Vodafone with iPhone, the other from Yoobee with iPad, the only working one is the one I have at work which they bought.

A cable that gets constantly plugged in / out, moves around, can twist bend etc; I would not consider being covered by the CGA. It is reasonably expected that these can fail with general use and are not a significant cost to replace.
Obviously if the phone has a two year warranty, then it would probably be replaced; but outside of warranty I'd expect not.

Rubbish.  Apple cables are poorly designed, with no proper strain relief.  I have Samsung and even no brand microusb cables with 2-3 years on them, used constantly, and no signs of deterioration.  In the meantime my wife has been through 2 genuine apple cables and 3-4 knockoffs in 12 months.

Unless someone from Vodafone confirms I'll give the CGA a call and see what they say, I don't fancy spending another $30 on a lightening cable.

At 22 months it is time you moved on to a new phone - thus solving your cable issue at the same time! ;-)

I partly agree; if it's poor design then sure. But I think people take the CGA a bit too far sometimes. Things do fault and break: where the CGA protects you is that you should not expect any significant failure for a reasonable period of time.
E.G. If I bought a band new computer with 12 month warranty and say after 18 months the power supply died and it cost $100 for a new one. I'd say that's fair and reasonable for me to cover the cost of that repair. If however the motherboard failed and it was going to cost several 100 $$ to repair, then I'd say that is a much more significant failure that should not really occur that early in its life: this is where the CGA should cover me.

If you need a spare set of ear buds you could just buy one of these? (assuming you have an iPhone 5/5c/5s):

they want you to buy a new phone.

and NO don't get the cheap cables they don't work!

and NO apple cables have no strain relief whatsoever. at least get some flexible banding, at best wire coils :D but apple cables = nothing. tape some insulating tape at the ends for around 5-10cm will save you money. if it's a lightning cable just buy apple and then it will work for your next iphones :D
