I'm trying to get a WxC fax-to-email number working properly. I've had the WxC people fax me for testing and I received a TIFF file by e-mail so it appears that its working. But when trying to send a fax to the number from a friend's place (he has a WxC VFX Line, Grandstream HT-01 Single Port ATA), I can't seem to send faxes to my fax-to-email number.

When using on-hook dialling w/ the fax machine, I hear WxC pick up the call but then WxC's end hangs up almost immediately and then I hear a 'busy' tone. After a few attempts, the fax machine gives up and prints out a report stating the fax was unable to be sent because the line was "BUSY".

I can however send & receive to/from other numbers so my mate's fax machine would appear to be functional.

Where can I start with figuring out why this isn't working? TIA.

Are you using your own configured ATA or a WxC provisioned one?

Dialing off hook will fail like that because it's unable to negotiate T.38

Assuming it's a WxC provisioned device, what happens when you dial from the fax directly?

Hi Steve, it's not a WxC device, just a clunker I had lying around in my box o' bits.

I have managed to send a fax to (and receive a fax from) a colleague out from this setup, so I presume it is configured correctly.

I've just had another colleague send a text from his fax machine, that didn't arrive either

In which case your device probably isn't configured correctly for T.38

What happens when you ring from a normal landline? Do you hear the full CNG tones trying to negotiate the call setup?

I was unware T.38 required configuration -- I thought all you have to do is enable it?

The ATA settings are here: http://iforce.co.nz/i/ci4fe1rf.hcs.png

I rang in from my cell to the fax-to-email number, WxC answered immediately and I'm hearing the tones I should be. But when I send a fax from my fax machine, WxC answers, then I hear about half a second of the tone and then I hear a "busy" tone.

However, if I send a fax out (to an analog line with fax) that's working. I just can't seem to send any faxes to the WxC fax-to-email number from my VFX line with this ATA.

What you're describing appears to be a classic case of a T.38 ReINVITE failing and (probably) sending back a 488 Not Acceptable Here.

No idea about Grandstream stuff but there ATAs have always been very average devices. Outbound to other numbers could be working for any number of reasons, including the possibility it's simply using G.711 passthru.

T.38 is a minefield of incompatability.

Turn T38 off and try again. I found it was more problem then it solved for recieving. With it off it took ages to send because of all the errors, but I dont care if it takes people ages to send me a fax because they are people sending me a fax.

Ok I tried it again with "Fax" in "pass through" mode vs "T.38", and still getting the same thing.

It looks like I can send just fine to most standard faxes, but I can't send to the WxC fax-to-email number.

Oh well its not the end of the world.
