I posted a while ago to gauge the experience of Vodafone cable users in Wellington when their install occurred and had some good feedback.

It was also pointed out by some of the Vodafone staff on here that Downers/Total Telco were normally pretty accommodating with install requests.

With that in mind I approached a Downer installer a little whole ago and asked him about the install (he had installed from the pole to the soffit and run a hideous piece of conduit down the outside wall and was proceeding to install the demarcation box just off ground level into the living room).

I explained that I was interested in an install that went to the soffit and had the demarcation box up near it and then went into the attic (as the existing chorus install does) where it could then tie in where the current adsl filter etc are and into the existing internal phone cabling. I'd also be happy with the modem being up there as I already had cat5 down to the e basement where the computer gear is.

He told me that he can't do that as their health and safety requirements mean that the demarcation point has to be accessible from the ground and he would have to do a similar install and run some crappy looking conduit down the outside to a demarcation box and then a jack on the other side (never mind that this is a bedroom on the opposite side off the house from the TV and where all the computer gear where my hubs, server, DSL modem etc sit in the basement).

If this is the case then I ain't interested and may as we'll try a vdsl path.

Can anybody advise if he is spinning me a line to get rid of me, or whether I can get the site pre checked (not keen to sign up and then have a downers tech insist the above and I have to lump it)?

Every install I've seen has ended up with the demarcation point at ground level. Personally I'd choose cable over VSDL any day even if it meant it "not looking good"

My cable install in 2001 was quite tidily done. No cables visible to the property at all! :)

Thanks .. was that an aerial install or an underground install? I'd presumed Vodafone won't do an underground install.

The cables on the street were above ground, they did a "drop bury" and used a boring device to drill under the landlord's property (in front of mine) to reach my place at the back. The cable connector box came out perfectly on the side of the house. Very tidy.
