We have a Suresignal (SS) because the VF cell signal was pretty poor for a while. Upgrades have seen the signal boosted on 3G to 3 or 4 dots depending where in the house you are.

My wife has been complaining of awful call quality (iPhone 6 to iPhone 6 +) when I am at home and she is working in Auckland. She is home for the weekend so we did an experiment.

With the SS unplugged, call quality is just fine.

As soon as it is plugged in and in use, the quality goes to hell.

Any idea why?

Poor broadband, when the suresignal is handling the call it's using your broadband

Nope. How can you tell if a call is through SS or not?

If it is unplugged, it isn't. If it is plugged in there is an indicator on the unit that shows it is in use.

It sounds very similar to a call where one or more callers is in a poor signal area - we even tried it with both phones using the SS and it was still bad.

is there an option to change the voice codec being used in suresignal?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

How about another approach here...

try turning your offsite backups off for a bit, and see if call quality improves?

This. Unless you have qos set up to ensure the sure signal is getting the bandwidth it needs, then it's going to be pretty hit and miss. Your recent thread indicating your upstream is continuously maxed out would have an impact on this.

There is no monthly charge, it is a once-off fee for the device, and then just whatever the ongoing monthly fee for your broadband is. It just plugs into the router. :)

Have you checked if our mobile coverage has by any chance been upgraded in your area recently? The device might not even be needed at all anymore, and may in fact cause handover issues if your coverage is now okay.  The number of faults that cross my desk for SS issues because coverage has been upgraded is mind boggling.

So both phones support HD voice (a better quality audio standard) you now have better 3G coverage at your home location(and 3G at work in Auckland i would guess).
When you don't use the suresignal device quality is great (HD voice).
When you turn on the suresignal and connect the quality is poor( as this device is not HD voice capable).
Is this the issue that is being complained about?
Is the suresignal device even needed now?
