I am still having problems with my PAP2T occasionally not re-registering after an ADSL outage. I have to power cycle my WAG54G to get things going again.

I have given the PAP2T a fixed IP address which helped but was not the complete solution.

The problem still occurs maybe once every 2 or 3 months, just enough that I can never completely rely on the VFX line and my wife is not impressed when she can’t ring her mother.

Would a fixed IP with Xnet help with recovery from an outage?

Hi Michael

If you could run a test for me please, once the PAP2T is up just disconnect the DSL line and wait 1 or 2 minutes until the Phone light disappears, then reconnect the DSL and see if the PAP2T reconnects should happen within 2 - 3 minutes if you can do this 2 or 3 times to see if you get an intermittent result.

Let me know what the outcome is and depending on the result  I may make a slight change to something in your config.

Oh one last thing do you have the latest firmware for your WAG ? and in answer to your question would a fixed IP help the answer is possibly but won't be able to decide that until we look at a couple of things first.

Well I disconnected the telecom line out of the wag54g 4 times last night and the pap2t re-registered every time. These things never happen when you want them to. The wag54g firmware is 1.02.20.

hmmm hate that .... as a suggestion the next time you go out disconnect the dsl line and reconnect it when you get home, that way we will see if it's a time related issue.

I left the ADSL line out for about 5 hours. As soon as I plugged it back in the pap2t re-registered 30 seconds later, sigh

I'm begining to think the WAG54G is marginal. Somtimes when I turn on the power to the computers it disconnects. What would be a good replacment?

How much do you want to spend?  Do you need ADSL2+ now or in the future (i.e. near exchange and not rural?

$200-$300, ADSL2+ would be good, I am near the exchange which is changing over soon.

WAG54GP2 v2 (look for VFX sticker on box, otherwise old model).  Apparently there is also a new box coming out pre-printed with VFX on it instead of a sticker, which will be even better because you will know it is brand new stock and not old stock.  Can get it around $230 if you shop around.  Then sell your PAP2T on TradeMe for $60 to $90.  It is so much easier having everything in one box, and less power adapters.  No f*rting around with setting op different boxes with their IP addresses and different config screens.  You'll have one system that was built to work together.  I have the modemless version WRTP54G and it works really well.  None of that having to reboot every time you change a setting, it simply applies settings as you would expect it to (except some security settings).  I am told the call quality is also better than the PAP2T, but not confirmed.  Should be, since (only) the PAP2T is no good for faxing.
