I didn't notice this with our PSTN or cellphones (both GSM and CDMA) with either Telecom or Vodafones hold music.

Since you have posted this in the WxC forum please clarify if you are referring to the music from WxC, or to music in general over a VFX connection?  If specific to WxC, well I have phoned them only once or twice but never got to hear any music as they answered very quickly even at peak time.  If over VFX, then there was a post recently about the volume in general being too loud and then Phil informed us about the gain setting in the latest firmware.

In general, the music would be played at 0dB (or -3dB, for this post simply pick a number near maximum) to get maximum SNR but most people do not talk that loud into handsets.  Also handsets pick up normal speech at lower than 0dB, because who determines how loud is 0dB anyway (dB is a relative scale)?  They have to leave headroom for people with loud voices.  But the guys making the "on-hold music playing things" get very theoretical and simply plays the music at 0dB since that is what it "should" be.  If they were making it as a consumer item, then it would be more practical but technically not "ideal".

Actually I prefer the music to be slightly loud, as I can put down the phone and continue my work until the music stops (or put the phone on my shoulder).

Typically (modern) cordless phones will not sound so loud, because they have restricted RF bandwidth to utilise and so have compressors implemented.  Also have to comply with emissions testing which is easier when using a limited bandwidth (but that is probably getting too technical).

Yes this was when I was on hold for Xnet help desk and I was using a VFX line. But the same thing happens on normal POTS
lines as well. Ihug were the same when put on hold with them. In some ways it's good that you can put the phone down. But
keeping it against for ear is a pain......Maybe if they played some uplifting classical music.......as long as it didn't put you to sleep.

Anyway It was just a general comment.
Also the good thing with WxC you aren't on hold for very long Smile

This is one of those things that no one will ever win on Laughing, the old music on hold debates,  with so many tastes in the world it's one that will go on for ever.

I was all for having Celine Dion for Music on Hold but there would have been blood on the floor in our OP's group before that happened I can assure you and the Deep Purple or Linard Skinard wasn't a good option eitherLaughing

Yes I am a employee of WxC (My Profile) ... but I do have my own opinions as well Wink

Though one thing I will say, I much prefer to listen to continuous music, no matter how boring than to hear
"Thankyou for staying on hold, we do appreciate you call, we'll be with you shortly" "we do value your call, rady ra blah blah muble jumble"
every 20 seconds in really loud blary voice.

I just called 0800 123456 and got some seriously sick squealing packet-loss sound every time I made a noise or pressed a button.......ugh.

How about "press 1 for Celin Dion, 2 for Bon Jovi, 3 for ...".  And I agree, those "Thanks for holding" messages are the worst especially if the message is longer than the music.

hold music is worse when its too quiet and keeps cutting out and being replaced with comfort noise.

My samsung w531 was shaocking at that, it has a noise gate internally that was set far too high. you would hear nothing.

EVRC which is the default CDMA vocoder is awful and reproducing music and again hides much of the dynamic range in order to keep bandwidth down.

Then there is Vodafone's internal "comfort noise" AGC... ugh.

Hold music is actually quite a science.
