I just received the following email:

WXC Notification of Priority 1  Event - In Progress.

Start Date: 19/11/2013 14:40

Dear Valued Customer:

Please be advised that your services may still be affected by an unplanned Priority 1 Event.

Genbands crashing

The next update will be in 15 minutes.

Regards - WXC NOC

Not only is it dated more than a year ago, but I'm not a WXC customer (but was back in 2010-ish) and am not on the NOC mailing list. Did anyone else get one of these?

That would explain it!

Now, time for a chat about email address retention ;)

Completely agree - I haven't been a customer of theirs for 12 months and I received this email as well.

Me too, also haven't been a customer for over 3 years!

Edit: And have now had two apology emails. :)

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Hi Guys and Girls,

Yes we do humbly apolagise for this, however we have to maintain records for a number of reasons and nothing untoward in that, this includes Tax and Accounting audits so all details are required to be retained for a period of time (the tax man has to get his share as well as the auditors), this was an unfortunate error that occurred while notification testing / process were being done, old account emails are not used by us but but unfortunately in this case a number of people were sent this test message accidentally from a test environment, we do retain accounts details however for the above reasons which is normal business practice.

I got the email too and have never been a customer of WXC. In fact I'd never even heard of them before today. So why would the company have my email address?

WXC used to be Xnet; have you ever been with them?

That explains it. Been 3 or 4 years since we've been with them mind you.

Why is customer data being used in test?

Very concerning they are using customer data in their test environment.
Maybe the next accidental email will be personal data?

btw - I cancelled my Xnet account 5 years ago.

Jesus... so our personal client data from long closed accounts is accessible by hardware in test environments.
f that breach can be made, what else do I need to worry about? How many other mistakes have been made that I wasn't made aware of?

I thought it was a bit odd when I got my email as I haven't been a customer for a few years. Just got the 'apology' email today which started off "Dear Customer"...
