So my flatmates and I have moved flat, we decided that we needed more speed. With no Fibre, our options were limited to either VDSL or Cable. We chose Cable, which meant Vodafone. The speeds have been great, (100mbps) but the ping to Oceanic (AU) Smite servers is around 220ms, where it was normally 60ms on Snap! ADSL.
I sent a tracert to Vodafone and they did reply promptly and professionally saying that they would fix it within five days.
After the five days was up with no improvements, I contacted them again.

The guy said something along the lines of, "The current route though Hong Kong is the only route we can provide as we can't get cooperation out of [insert name here]. So I can't give you a date as to if/when we can fix it, this is basically just waiting for them, it comes down to politics."

I suspect that I misunderstood parts of what he was saying.

So I was hoping that someone here, maybe even from Vodafone, might be able to give me a better summary or more information in writing.
Is it possible that this just won't get fixed at all? Plus if it's going to take close to a year we might as well change ISP now.
Is it really that difficult to form an alternative route? Is it just expensive? I haven't done enough network related stuff to know.
Because Hong Kong seems kinda extreme.... Especially when west coast US servers had 170ms on Snap!
This is kinda "our" game here, we all play Smite, we've been playing for years and really don't want to have to sacrifice speeds to be able to play competitively.

Cheers.

This appears to be Vodafone NZ's fault.

Servers Australia, the folks that host your game, openly peer at all the major peering exchanges in Australia.

Pipe, IX Australia, Equinix, Megaport. Yip, yip, yip & yip.

Well this is wonderful. So does this mean that Vodafone lied to me?

Sorry, I didn't see it. But by the looks of it, there's not much hope any time soon.
Anyone know if Vodafone will sort this out?

So I decided to use the AU endpoint from VPN provider (PIA).

Kinda looks like everyone is gonna have to use the VPN, or we change back to Snap!

Who is 'insert name here' or was that what they actually typed?

Also, pretty impressive you guys have been playing smite for years when it hasn't even been out for a year. :P

Eta: I guess you played in the beta or something.

This was a phone conversation, I was paraphrasing and I can't remember what he said.
It was in open beta for a year before it was 'released' and it was in closed beta for another half year before that. So yes, years is stretching it. ;3

I have been complaining about Vodafone (TelstraClear) routing for years...

If you really need/want something specifically related to this, change to Snap.

I've said it many many times lately...

The ONLY reason to be with Vodafone is for HFC or 4G. Otherwise literally ANY other ISP is a good choice.

Do you have a contract with Vodafone? If you changed to VDSL would you be penalised?

Yeah, I knew that this was a possibility going into this, I was stupid enough to push that thought aside for the speeds. I already miss them.

Snap was great, but we chose speeds :/ . I just find it ridiculous that it's either speeds or routing.

Chorus map suggests >10mbps, and we're a bit out of the way, so I don't think ADSL would be good and VDSL probably isn't even offered.
With five heavy internet users we needed cable.

quickymart: Do you have a contract with Vodafone? If you changed to VDSL would you be penalised?

Unfortunately, yes, we have a contract. But this is an interesting point.
Would it really be routed differently? Is this to do with the way their DSL routes can't handle UFB throughput?
Maybe if by chance they offer VDSL, we might consider switching to that.

So guys? Has it always been this bad? Is it getting worse/better?
For now, the VPN works. How ridiculous.

chevrolux, the way HFC is going lately. You might want to scratch it off your want list.

I am on HFC 100/10, there is nothing wrong with it. I am consistently at the maximum possible for my contracted plan with only the odd occasion it drops down.

If there was nothing wrong with it then this thread wouldn't exist, therefore you wouldn't be here to say that there is nothing wrong with it. I think you've created a paradox! surprised
