I need to setup a static IP address (for a Synology DS414) from a HG659 modem/router for a friend but can not find the settings.

I have searched vodafone support FAQ and found one that states the end user is unable to do so. You have to contact tech support to do so. So we contacted support and there may have been some confusion as they initially thought that we wanted a static IP address, which they tried to sell us at $20 per month. I tried to explain that I needed to give the diskstation a static IP address which the CSR said she will speak to tech support and get back to us. So when she got back, her answer wasn't much help as they would need to change us to a static IP, at the monthly cost as previously mentioned so tech support can connect and make the changes needed. Decided to not to go ahead with it as there still seems to be a mis-communication.

All I wanted to do was for the router to issue a static IP address for the DS414 as it requires a static one. This is the first time I have come across a router where you are not able to provide a static IP address for a machine on your home network.

Does anyone here know how I can do this myself?

You don't need to touch a modem/router to set a static IP, but it helps to change the DHCP scope (if possible) to ensure that IP addresses handed out don't clash.

set the IP address on the NAS to something less than .64

the DHCP address pool starts at .64

failing that you can always get the NAS a DHCP assigned address and change the lease duration to permanent

Thanks guys,

It has been getting the same address which is xxx.xxx.xxx.2 but its the lease duration that is the problem. If I can't issue a static address (which in my opinion I should be allowed to), how can I set it as permanently? I can't find the settings for it?

Hi Chuckles.

Login to the HG659. Use the username Admin and password VF-NZhg659.

Navigate to Home Network -> LAN Interface -> DHCP reservation -> Create new static address.

Should be sorted.

Cheers.

Thanks Hairy1,

Thats what I thought, just couldn't find the admin login details, only the default vodafone one. Will try that.

Cheers

Just set a static IP on the NAS there is no need to set a DHCP reservation. Should be control panel>network>network interface>edit on the NAS.

Yeah. Vodafone decided in their wisdom that no end users should have the admin username. Unfortunately it severely limits the use of this router if the owner is doing anything other than simple stuff.... Frustrating.

It also has a bug which drops custom DNS servers on a reboot but that is another story.

Anyhoo. Good luck.

Cheers, Matt.

The main issue is the lease duration of IP address that the router issues. When it expires, the mapped drives of the NAS are disconnected and have been causing the external harddrive (used to backup the NAS) that is attached to it to go offline as well. This problem is fixed by having a static address with permanent lease, which I was able to do on a previous router(TP link).

but if you havent touched the DHCP pool on the router .2 is outside that scope and isnt a DHCP address its a static address so there is no lease

but the lease shouldnt expire as the NAS would always be in contact with the router and always renewing that lease, if it is doing it that way

just find out what your DHCP pool is and set the IP address on the NAS to an address outside of that pool

The default dhcp scope on the hg659 is .2 to .49 so it getting a dhcp address.

Now that chuckles has Admin access it doesn't matter as a dhcp reserved IP address can be assigned.
