I see that this issue doesn't appear to have been discussed here. However if Xnet customers weren't already aware, if you send email via smtp.xnet.co.nz to an Xtra/Yahoo/ Telecom email address, they more than likely will not receive the email, as Yahoos spam filtering appear to have blacklisted Xnets IP numbers.

This is a major problem as so many NZers use Xtra/Yahoo/Telecom email addesses. The emails first get delayed by many hours, and then they go into yahoos bulk mail filter. If the xtra customer doesn't use Yahoo webmail, and only downloads their email using POP, then they will never receive the email that is in the bulk mail bin.

Xnet are fully aware of the problem and apparently have been in contact with Yahoo to fix the problem. However this problem isn't posted on their network status page, which would be handy if they could, then we can know when the problem has been fixed. Apparently the problem is also affecting other ISPs, not just email that is sent from Xnet. This problem appears to have gone on for at least a week, and Xnet don't appear to have yet been able to get their IPs off Yahoos blacklist.

I have however independently contacted Yahoo via their Bulk Email Abuse form, and managed to get the IP address I have been temporarily assigned by Xnet off the blacklist, but Yahoo refuse to take the other IPs off the black list. If I reset my modem however, my IP address will be reset, and I will again be blacklisted.

This issue is also being discussed here http://pressf1.co.nz/showthread.php?t=84221

And there are also quite a few articles on the internet about this problem.

I should mention that the issue affects people who have their own domain name, and are sending email via smtp.xnet.co.nz, using that domain name eg ...@domainname.co.nz. I don't kow whether it affects actual ...@xnet.co.nz addresses. Becuase my IP has now been whitelisted,I can no longer test it. However it is possible Yahoo may have removed the blacklist on a range of IP addresses.

It sounds like it will eventually end up a small range of fixed IP addresses when used in conjuction with your own domain name need validating by Xnet. Have you talked to their helpdesk? I would think they could get it rectified quickly. cheers George

If you have your own domain name make sure you are not using your own SMTP server - I know you say smtp.xnet.co.nz, but check your configuration.

This is something on Xtra's side that is also dropping e-mails from geekzone.co.nz when they were sent from my Exchange Server, but accepted all if I changed the configuration to use smtp.paradise.net.nz as a smarthost.

Thanks, yes it is set correctly to smtp.xnet.nz, and my website host doesn't provide SMTP accesses for sending emails, so I have to use the one provided by my ISP.

Xnet have confirmed that there is a problem, as this is the email I received from them. Obviously Xnet are also a victim of this situation.

We have been dealing with xtra and yahoo directly regarding this issue.
The issue is made more difficult by Yahoo now dealing with xtras mail
servers offshore.

We are working with Xtra to try and get this issue resolved ASAP. Please
also be aware it is not only xnet having the problems but other ISPs as
well.

Thanks George, yes I have contacted them, describing the problem, and their email (from Malcom@Xnet) is in my post above.

I've been trying to deal with Xtra in regards to mail issues, however it seems they now have absolutely no control over their own mail service.  After speaking with Xtra CTS I was advised to visit this site - http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-7793692,00.html.

I went through filling out the appropriate forms for Yahoo support to look over - This is the response which was given

Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Mail.

The IP address of the mail server you indicated appears to be on a
shared IP (for use by your various clients). As such, we are unable to
systematically exempt emails from this server from our SpamGuard
technology. As a result, some Yahoo! Mail recipients may receive
mailings from this server in their Bulk Mail folder.

Please be aware that Yahoo! Mail users are able to set their own
preferences for the manner in which they receive mailings. If the
recipients of these messages want to ensure they receive these emails
in their Inbox, they can set up a filter to direct these emails there. Or,
they can opt-out of having a Bulk Mail folder altogether by changing
the settings in their Mail Options page.

Furthermore, Yahoo! Mail users may contact Yahoo! Customer Care to
bring to our attention messages that are being delivered to the Bulk Mail
folder that they feel are more appropriately delivered to their Inbox.

For assistance with delivery issues to Yahoo! Mail, please visit:

http://postmaster.yahoo.com/
Please let us know if you still need assistance so we may assist you> further.

Your patience is greatly appreciated.
Thank you again for contacting Yahoo! Mail.

The emails have gone back and forth since, with Yahoo recommending best practises and not confirming or denying any block/issue with mail being delivered.  Obviously this is extremely frustrating for us, other mail services and Xtra customers whose mail is being delayed and left in a spam folder they don't check.

We'll continue to try and work with Yahoo to resolve the issue, but it appears they aren't willing to assist or even investigate why most emails are being deferred and ending up in the bulk mail folder.

I got exactly that same reply after I filled in the form, so it must be a form letter they send to everyone.

If you need A quick fix I suggest applying for a static ip and having that ip whitelisted, that way you will always keep the same ip when you reconnect and will not have the problem, Im sure xnet will be happy to provide you with one for this reason if you depend heavely on sending to people with those email types.

Thanks I hadn't thought of doing that. I just hope that they provide me with the IP addres that I currently have that have have managed to get whitelisted. Yahoo howeve may decide in the future to reblock a range of addresses again. Apparently some  vodafone/ihug users are having the same trouble with Yahoo filtering.

Visit www.xnet.co.nz/staticip if you'd like to apply for a static address.  It will be different from the IP you may have whitelisted as that IP will be in a DHCP pool.

Thanks but they are not currently allocating static IPs due to major network migration.

I hope your modem is running off a UPS so you do not loose your current IP Tongue out
Normally you do not even have to give a reason, you simply ask and you get it (unless you use it for the wrong reasons).

No Nate this is still ongoing, so far all our attempts to get this resolved via Yahoo and Xtra have been met with a brick wall and unfortunately besides making them aware of the issue theres not alot else we can do.
