Hi Forum Users,
Anyone else having problems loading the 2 main newspaper sites stuff.co.nz and Herald.co.nz?
Really bad the last few days, both not loading over minutes or not at all on Herald!!

Connecting via a VPN in LA makes it work, so looks like DNS Server or proxy mirror issues to me at VF??
am on High speed 50/2Mbs in Chch (Cable network).

In general terms Not much surprises me with VF Cable Broadband these days, its just going backwards, service really poor and network stressed - can't wait to switch ISP when contract up later this year. Maybe VF are just focusing on their main gig the 4G mobile fight with Spark and 2D, with little $$ for the former TCL fixed network?!frown

Hi @Southerner

What DNS are you using? Sounds like you are not using the correct DNS servers

203.97.78.43 and 203.97.78.44

What are local speedtests like? Please do not test over WiFi only Ethernet

http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=148718

FYI VodafoneNZ has spent a load of cash on the Cable (HFC) network since taking it over from TCL and more to come over the next 12 months

Hi JohnR

Thanks for the response - Yes been using these DNS settings you quote for some years now.

Speedtest over Ethernet

Speed test over WIF

Trace RT / ping to NZ Herald via Ethernet
Tracing route to w1.apnnz.com [184.154.158.58]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 349 ms 200 ms 201 ms hoppy.apnonline.co.nz [184.154.158.58]
Trace complete.

C:\Users\Pete>tracert www.stuff.co.nz
Tracing route to a1784.g.akamai.net [42.99.128.138]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 230 ms 228 ms 229 ms ip-42-99-128-138.pacnet.net [42.99.128.138]
Trace complete.

You will note really long 230 ms to 349ms ping from here in Chch to both Stuff Akamai server 42.99.128.138 and APN NZ Herald 184.154.158.58 servers
50MB downloads now at 34-39Mb - but speed is not the issue here I believe!

Looks to me like needs more investigation by your engineers at a server Chch to Auck VF WAN network level.

Trust this helps.
Cheers

You will need to call and get an official fault ticket logged, The tier1 team will need to do an investigation on your connection and then if they can't resolve the issue raise it up to Tier2

When logging a ticket make sure you note down the fault ticket number!

John

Logged a fault last week John - Still waiting on call back etc from your Techs.

FYI tracert ping to Stuff Akaimai via LAX VPN (see below)
162msec round trip vs 229msec direct on VF .... So I think this must be internal VF Servers/network!

Cheers

Hi
Thanks for this test info Bugz - so looks like a more local overloading issue here on my VF Cabinet in Hoon Hay, or South Chch network to the POP, or poss a Cisco Cable modem issue?  The problem is intermittent too (traffic??).

See what transpires when VF techs call next week (hopefully!)...

Regards

Have you got the fault ticket number noted down and when was it logged last week?
