Ok, my partner is currently on a Vodafone $39 open plan for mobile giving her 1.25 GB, 300 mins and unlimited texts.

We are looking to upgrade her S2 to a S6. To do so with Vodafone, the phone will cost $43 per month (24 mths), plus $99 upfront - total $1,131.

2Degrees will do the phone for $1,099 over 24 months, and for $39 give us 400 carry over minutes, 1.5 GB data and unlimited txts.

So, it's a no-brainer isn't it?

When I raised this with Vodafone, they offered a first month credit which brought the cost of the phone to a par with 2Degrees.

Yes, we qualify for $10 monthly discount from Vodafone for broadband as we have an on account mobile, but even after this, the 2Degrees extra 100 mins per month, plus carry over, and the extra 250 MB data still make 2Degrees the better deal. And I fully expect 2Degrees to offer a similar discount for broadband now they have purchased 2Degrees.

No qualms with Vodafone as company, their product is good. But we'll be swapping over to 2Degrees.

I am not sure why these threads are started but the carriers know what plans are in the market place and what is on offer and the part of the market they wish to target,

Then the network and other offers like $5 roaming / 4G roaming you are not comparing apples with apples

I would stick with Vodafone.

Good coverage all over NZ, network is quick, and it just works.  Their helpdesk can be slow at times, however I don't call them very often.

All up to you of course

/my 2 cents.

if price was the only critirea, you will find that paying outright and getting skinny will be cheapest option.

I am happy with Vodafone and I hardly call their call centre. For me the $5 roaming is great as I travel and of course the coverage is good too around where I work and live. Price is not always the criteria for me to decide choosing a provider.

Easy, I can explain why I started the thread. I didn't start the thread for the carriers, I started it for their customers. I just think that the 2Degrees have a great deal when stacked against our current provider, so I thought I'd let others know about it. Simple, really.

I switched to 2degrees for price. I switched away for coverage in central Wellington as soon as I got a smart phone.

I have to agree, Vodafone brought Carry Over to prepay back in November last year and it's still a feature that is only available on prepay :(

Honestly, I couldn't tell why you originally posted here and you certainly didn't pitch the original post in the way you explain.

You say you plan to switch on the basis of lowest cost. If low cost is your priority then there is no doubt that 2 Degrees and Skinny are your best options. But cost is not the whole story as others have pointed out. For example, Skinny is often the better because you get the Spark network rather than the more limited 2 Degrees network extended by using Vodafone's network.

Also, responding to your original post, it's very hard to comment on what is the best deal when we know nothing about your partner's (or your) actual needs. If low cost is your priority then I would be looking at what I need before looking at what is available. You may not need either plan you mention. Your comparison would also be moot if your partner never uses anywhere near the talk time and data on either plan.

Two Degrees have more or less the same amounts of data on their pay monthly plans yet it still Carry's Over

My own experience is that 2degrees pricing is very good, as are their carry over options, BUT coverage may be a bigger factor than you think (as others have pointed out)

We swapped my wife's phone from vodafone to 2degrees and everything is great while we're in the city, but quite frequently when on holiday (e.g. in the coromandel) she seems to have poor reception and no data while mine (still on vodafone) is fine.

It's easy to forget the coverage factor when you use your phone mainly in a metropolitan area...one holiday outside your town or city can quickly snap you back to reality.

I have a work phone on one network and a personal one on another - frankly they're much of a muchness in town.

Once I get out of Auckland - quite a different scenario.

I agree though, that it would be nice to have a $39 plan with 5GB of data that rolls over and unlimited minutes, txt, pxt and mysky thrown in.
