Much to my surprise, when I woke up this morning (in Martinborough) my phone showed 4G! It's never done that here before.

Within half an hour it was back to 3G and hasn't shown 4G since. Anyone know why that might be?

Most likely Vodafone are testing a new 4G site in your area.

Most likely coming from the Featherston site that had 4G added recently.

@JohnR has deployed the Black Helicopter to install your 4G as per: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=40&topicid=171149&page_no=2#1280700 but has locked your phone out until you pay the helicopter fuel bill :)

Cheque is in the post - don't want to pay the card 'convenience fee' on a helicopter fuel bill...! ;-)

Obviously 4G is not handed out on socio-economic grounds then...!

I view 4G with much amusement here in Christchurch,  I only really see a 4G indicator at about 6am in the morning, it soon degrades to 3G and stays that way for the rest of the day.

Interesting; why would it do that?

Well that should not happen unless you work in a building the 4G singal on 1800Mhz can't get into

Hmm, maybe if you're on the edge of coverage and there's a particular type of interference that affects the panel providing you coverage (and maybe a partially damaged phone in the mix as another variable) that could happen, maybe?

I used to know some guys who told me they had particular equipment setup so they could watch Australian TV until the sun came up and introduced too much interference. Or they could've just been telling me stories. :)

If it was in the days of analog TV then it's true.   I used to do the same when I lived in Wellington in the 1970s..
