Phil,

I live in Wellington and from time to time I call to Paraparaumu and as I know Paraparaumu in Wellington area I do NOT enter 04 in front of a telephone number. And every month I'm getting the invoices with charged Paraparaumu calls. It really annoying to call every month to support and clean up the issues. Can you fix the problem, please?

Paraparaumu is not in the Wellington LCA. TelstraClear offer free calling to and from Paraparaumu and if you ask Telecom nicely they will also offer you the same (it is not automatic however).

It's still not in the Wellington LCA even though it's an 04 prefix. All of the South Island for example is 03 and this is divided up into something like 50 LCA's. This means that even though you're still calling another 03 number you are infact making a toll call.

Telecom will also charge you for a call from Wellington to Kapiti unless you specifically ask to have these calls included for free.

Having the same area code does not mean it's within the same "local free calling area"...

For example, 09 is for Auckland...  But for Kaitia, it's also (09)xxxxxxx...

Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa all share 06, but they are toll calls.

And yeah, the mainland I grew up in is the biggie - 03 for Picton to Bluff - but there is a large number of different calling areas within that code.

Not to sure if this is the most up to date version, but this divides up the areas.

O1EG All areas that come under the same area code on VFX you dont have to dial 04 or 03 or 06 but if they fall outside your normal local telecom calling area then you will be charged for it. It is the same here I live in New Plymouth and yet I can dial a number between here and Stratford about 30kms away and even though I dont dial 06 because it is still outside my local calling area I do get charged for the call. In your case it is 04 that you dont dial but it still falls outside the Wellington free calling area.

Telstra have never charged for calls between Kapiti and Wellington, but Telecom seem to have a bee in their monolithic bonnet over it.  I'm sure Telecom have lost hundreds (or more) customers because of that charge.  VFX charge too, but charge so little that is doesn't matter to me!

The only other thing you could do is suggest to the person you call in Paraparaumu to get VFX as well and then you can make unlimited free calls to that person and vice versa
