There is a another thread running about the coolest things to do with VFX..... Rather than hijack it:

What are the oddest, strangest questions / comments from friends and relatives you get when running VFX or italk etc?

I am sick of people asking if it is a pain to have the computer on all the time to receive phone calls... Or whether we have to sit at our computer to make a phone call....

For a while there I was thinking of drawing a diagram of our system and handing it to people when they asked....

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

"Dont you work for Telecom?" - No. I work for Gen-i.
"Is that like Skype?" - Yes. Its just like Skype. And I drive a Kia Sorrento. And I am a Ninja Master.
"Whats their latency like?" - as if WxC control the latency.

Everyone I talk to about VFX seems to picture skype in thier minds.... Mind you, someone asked me the other day "What is skype?"

We have this crappy little cheap cordless phone - had it for 4 years or so (it has learnt lots of new tricks since changing to VFX).  My family had got used to it, but now they say 'you sound a long way away' again, because they blame it on the 'Internet Phone'.  What amazes me is that they are so scared to leave Telecom - I suggested it (again) to a sister in Timaru the other day "We don't have many options down here" "But they (company on-selling Telecom home line for less) use your existing Telcom line" "Oh ...".  She doesn't have a lot of money, but just doesn't believe you can pay less and get the same service.  I'm sure she (and a million or two others) will think it is just dandy when Telecom eventually goes VoIP. Undecided

I get that one too! Being on wireless internet confuses people, "How can you get the internet and telephone without Telecom?"

Don't even get me started on the Slingshot Tolls rep that called me the other night. I don't know how many times I had to tell him "I don't have a Telecom line!".

Interesting thought though, I wonder what would have happened if I went through the signup process with him?

Never mind Slingshot Tolls. Just after we signed up with VFX we got rung by telecomarketers from both Slingshot and WxC, trying to sell us toll plans. neither of them knew what VoIP is! I wonder if their training (Surprised) has been extended to at least a list of other products their own company offers!

PS - edit Forgot to mention ...
Kraven: "I don't have a Telecom line!".
iTalk "couldn't" port my number because their computer didn't believe a Telstra customer number could be four digits long (ex Saturn Cable).  VFX had problems too (least I think it was them) - because their software preferred to transfer numbers from Telecom, and going from Telstra was more complicated.  All worked perfectly in the end!

If they did this they would have to put their prices up. And we don't want that do we Smile. You ninjabear are the best advertising for them. It called word of mouth. Straight from the end user. Not from some drugged up AD Exec.

I get this question a lot as well.

I often compare the infancy of VoIP to the infancy of the fax machine.  Imagine when facsimile first came out, and a fax sales guy trying to sell a customer the ability to send a copy of a document immediately, without having to use the post.
