It took me a little while to get this working so here it is for the next person who tries to do the same.

Just switched cable broadband plans with Vodafone so they gave me a new NetComm NF5 router.  Previously I had a WXC certified device in which the voip settings were opaque and locked down.
Because the NetComm NF5 isn't a certified device I had to switch our WXC plan to Open VFX and configure the voip settings on the router myself.

Prerequisites;
 - full internet connectivity working from the NF5
 - switched WXC plan to Open VFX (rang WXC, took less than an hour to switch over and have the voip settings sent to me via email)

This is what I was sent from WXC;

Settings:
Proxy: pan.wxnz.net
UserID: 041234567
AuthUser: alongstringofrandomcharacters
AuthPassword: anotherlongstringofrandomcharacters

I configured the NF5 like so - which did not work (see status Unregistered);

Checking various posts in the forum suggested trying;
 - removing the leading 0 in the phone number
 - ensuring the domain was left empty
 - enabling DNS SRV
 - disabling SIP ALG

none of which worked...
I also tried various combinations of fields/settings on the main (service domain) config page.

A great suggestion from another thread was to test the ability to register any voip on the NF5 by creating a free account at 2talk.co.nz.  This was useful in that it provided decent setup instructions;
Generic SIP settings for SIP registrations
If your device is not listed in our user guides then you can usually register any generic SIP v2 compliant devices with just a few basic settings. The working associated with the settings can differ from device to device but generally you should only need the following settings to get registered to 2talk:

Login/Username/ID: your-2talk-number
Authorisation Username/ID: your-2talk-number
Password: your-2talk-password
Domain/Realm: sip.2talk.co.nz
Proxy: sip.2talk.co.nz
Outbound Proxy: sip.2talk.co.nz
Use Outbound Proxy: yes
Register Expires: 600
DMTF Mode: RFC2833 (or AVT/out of band)

And configuring the NF5 for the 2talk number actually worked (see the status is Registered)...

The working solution for the NF5 with Open VFX in the end was to keep all settings to the router default with a final configuration like so;

hope that helps the next person to try this.

Good to know you got this working. I have one note/question though.
What is the point of setting the outbound proxy as "pan.wxnz.net" and then not enabling the use of an outbound proxy. It feels redundant :)

yeah, you're right.

so my initial testing worked, at least I'm pretty sure it did.  and then I wrote up the post on how to configure it.
and then my wife tried to make an outbound call.  and it didn't work for her.  :S

in order to successfully make outbound calls I ended up having to delete the "outbound proxy" value.  so it's all as described earlier in the thread except there should be no Outbound Proxy value.
all working now.  :)
