I'm coming to the end of my contract with Vodafone and I'm up for a brand new phone.  Have been very happy with my i-mate K-JAM (nothing like txting on a full qwerty keyboard).

Anybody know what replaces this, or any recommendations for an upgrade?

For something officially from Vodafone, how about an imate JasJam?
http://store.vodafone.co.nz/Mobile_Details_Summary.aspx?ptrecno=2925

Or, how about an HTC TyTn 2?
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Mobile-phones/Vodafone-network/Other/auction-127859127.htm

Alternatively, for form factors unlike the Imate KJam, theres the Palm Treo 750v, Blackberry Curve etc.

The Jasjam would be the natural choice. Also the new Palm Treo 500v should work well, albeit a smartphone (no touch screen) so if you want to keep using your current software I would select the Jasjam...

also depends on what you want out of a new one that your k-jam doesn't do.  I'd prefer the k-jam had a bigger cpu so I could get the a2dp working (without stopping every 5 seconds)...I understand the jasjam has had an upgrade in this area (cpu).

But i agree, once you've got used to txting/emailing on a full keyboard, it would be hard to go back....unless you went for a "normal" phone and an eee pc...

I have Jasjam and been using it for a year now... if you got question regarding the day-to-day use on Jasjam, let me know. An ex-colleague of mine had K-Jam, which he got a month before I got Jasjam, was regretted that he got K-Jam, and showed great sign of wanting Jasjam for his next upgrade... No fault found on using Jasjam, I like it a lot.

If you want something new, HTC Touch-sorts are pretty good alternative with quite a new/innovative touchscreen input. It works quite well using Touch Keyboard (aka SureType) or Touch Keypad (xT9 or T9). You can get either SIPs installed on WM5+ devices too, should you not want to opt for HTC Touch phones.

there is also the hp HW6965.. (only a little newer then the k-jam and no upgrade path to windows mobile 6).

it has the form factor of the palm 750, bigger screen,  but beats the  palm with its wireless and GPS.

i have one.. (as well as a k-jam and a palm treo 750 which are both running wm6).

i like it better than both.. mainly due to the GPS ( killer with google maps and / or garmin mobile xt).

possibly better to wait until the new phones running wm6 are out though.

there will be some new HPs out early next year.. and there will always be the post christmas price drops.

I would not recommend a JasJar. It would be difficult to find any poorer phone functionality anywhere, on anything, in fact drawing a phone on a sheep carcass would be more satsfying (it does however run RDP well as it has a VGA touch screen and hence the only reason I still have one).

An althernate solution is combing a BlueTooth keyboard (a recommendation I'm willing to make now that I have finally got hold of the iGo reselling in Auckland) with a compatible phone, that way you have a small phone when you are on the run and have the choice of a keyboard for those long romantic text messages.

Note that the Jasjar is not the same as the Jasjam... They are different models.

Just thinkging about it now... i have a client with a jasjam..
its been in for service 2 times with screen issues.
if you do a google search for the hermes (JASJAM) screen issue you should come up with lots of results about missaligned screens etc..

also due to the fact the imate nolonger works with HTC (the manufacturer) there will be no Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) (officially) for the jasjam.

Ah... first, i don't have screen misalignining issue, second, Imate has made announcement that they will release WM6 for Jasjam.

And even if there's not WM6 for Jasjam, Jasjam is a good product with no fault that I can see. Totally satisfied with it.

I remember seeing the Jasjar when I first got my KJam - the thing is huge!  Not really made to fit into pants pockets.

Is the general consensus that the upgrade should be to a Jasjam?  Are there any features on any of the other phones mentioned that would override the convenience of a qwerty keyboard?

If there is, I'd be happy to sacrifice the keyboard for some other cool features :)
