http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported_Hardware#3G_cards_and_modems
I want to know if a K4607-z USB modem will work with a Mikrotik Router.

An older model of the Vodafone USB stick is on the Mikrotik list (above) but it doesn't have the current version.

I also want to know if the SIM that's in the stick will let me send texts.

The folk at The Palms in Shirley didn't think that their SIM cards would allow sending of texts.

I also want to send texts to Australia.  I know that 2Degress will do a $10 a month unlimited texting plan that I can use.  But I'm keen to know if I can just do this whole exercise with the Vodafone SIM that comes with the USB stick.

So, does anyone know what this USB stick actually is and if I need a different SIM to make it do what I want.

It could work, would need to test it and see how it goes. IIRC they have data usage notifications coming in as SMS so I figure they should be able to send too, but it would probably be at a casual rate, at a guess maybe 31c each to Australia (that was the casual rate on Supa Prepay). It might suit you more to use a Prepay $19 sim which has texts to Australia included.

The hardware isn't supported by Mtk currently.

It's an IP devices v's a serial one, so you have to switch it's mode according to most of the googling I've done so far.

I've contacted mtk support and they're looking at providing support. They asked about it working under linux but I haven't managed to make that happen yet either, though someone has provided more info on that and one of my guys is working on that currently.

In the mean time I just picked up a second hand older unit on Trademe so I'll box on with that.

2degrees don't seem to have issue with small volumes of traffic on their $10 unlimited fair use plan, so I'll head down that track for now.

Thanks guys for the attention :)
