So today I looked at my old routers and found I had a old wrt54gV2 with a internet port (aka wan port) I think its like 2004 router and read it should work ok with the vodafone cable modem SB5101

What I want to know is will it work.. has anyone got one of these working ok as
it has version model versions and firmware issues over the years.

whats the setup steps?

1) Note the IP settings hardcoded on the win7 pc lan TCP settings

2) advance settings of router..

have options for router mode and gateway mode

router mode has options to router wan, lan+wifi, or BOTH currently its set to lan+wifi

the dhcp is setup and router ip is set to 192.168.1.201

was used to add better wifi and security to a old ASDL modem years back.

Far too slow and old. 54 meg G wifi will have a hard time competing with all the 802.11n networks around. Its a 15 year old router and it shows.

the wifi is only going to be used for android tablet or phones.. its fast enough

what I like is the steps and settings people used. as I never interfaced one to a cable modem before

Im guessing might need to clone the mac address? and perhaps set it to gateway mode and
enter the correct ip values?

Even as 30 megabit internet connection is too much for those dinosaurs. You will have lockups and crashes with it. Sure it will "work" for browsing facebook etc, but as soon as one person tries to download an update it will clog up the underpower CPU in it and it will lag and crash.

Its from an era when it was a novelty to have a 100 megabit wan port. It cant actually use it to anywhere near its capabilities.

All you have to do is get its WAN config up, set it to static IP and stick in the values from the PC that was on the cable router initially. Save them, and then power cycle the cable modem and the router because that seems to help. I am not aware of needing to use the mac address cloning on cable in NZ, but I have only been involved in setting them up from a distance being that we dont have cable in auckland.

OK I didnt see that. but the people dont have much money so I doubt they upgrade.

some links seem to vanish in geekzone in firefox. . not sure why so maybe it didnt show

but I have a router that should work so might have a go at setting it up for them,

I think they just want to web browser and gmail and alike - nothing for big downloads
so they have faster speed and less expensive then 3g for tablets
so cpu should be ok.. can only try it I guess.

when I looked it didnt have a tab called WAN only advance settings when I brought up the web panel
but only looked at it quickly

so sounds like advance settings is the section perhaps.. and set it to gateway where it asks
for static IP and mask etc

ok IE10 shows up the yellow box but FF doesnt..

I cant seem to find modem specs for docsis 3.0

are they Cisco DPC3008

and do they have wifi built in now? or still have to jump another wifi router on it?

as upgrading plan is the point of getting faster and better modem with wifi

It sounds like you're trying to do this on the cheap, but I don't think you're going to get the results you're hoping for.

The Cisco DPC3008 is a solid modem. It's what I'm using here, and it's what I used back in the United States.

As others have advised, I strongly recommend against seeking out a modem/router combo, especially for cable Internet. The problem with a modem/router combo is that if one part of it dies, you have to replace it all. You also may not receive official Vodafone support with it, and if you ever want to upgrade, you'd likely wind up switching out half of a working device unnecessarily.

If you can get your hands on a DPC3008 and a decent, cheap router, you/they will be golden. Just find a cheap N150 router and attach it to the modem, spend a few minutes setting it up, and the connection will be fast, reliable, and ready to scale up if their needs ever change.

its not a device its a standard

they use a

ok so the Technicolor TC7210D is a cable modem with wifi ??

thats what i want to know.. I google it up and have a look

and yes want one single device with wifi not dual devices if can help it

and Im wondering if plan upgrade and free modem with it its it presetup and slide
old one out and put new on in place with wifi preset with a password on paper for them

or still need a tech to install

Yes, the TC7210D is a modem with WiFi. Vodafone supports it, and even has some handy instructions on their site for changing the WiFi.

If you're dead set on a single device, then that's a superb choice. You can install it yourself, but you'll need to pull a bit of information from your existing setup. Namely, you'll need their current IP address. Once you have that, you can simply use the information on this page, plug it all in with that information, and you'll be good to go.

Vodafone will send a tech out to install the replacement modem (Technicolor TC7210D) and configure it for you.
