Hi All

I have been using a WAG54GP2 for over 8 months now and whilst it is "ok" it is not very reliable, with intermitant lock ups. I have resorted to a mains timer that de-powers and re-powers each morning at 2am but even this has caused an occasional problem that required a further reset first thing in the morning.

Having read that the QOS for VFX is not related to the router could anyone suggest a rock solid ADSL router at a reasonable price that I can replace the WAG with.

If you don't care about the lack of VoIP capability:

RTA1025W. After the horrible WAG54G(v3) I had, it's gold. Has not dropped the ADSL once, and actually managed to keep sync for over two weeks. Only tip would be to make sure there's OK airflow around it, since it does keep rather warm. (Cooler than the WAG54G, mind)

Hello Andy,

From a personal viewpoint i have found that a Dynalink single port ethernet modem into a WRT provides the best performance. Couple of recent reviews from here and in australia seem to mirror this as well.

Our rta-1025 always locked up, and dynalinks support always promised calls back and never did, it was iffy for about 2-3 mins before totally dieing.

Replaced it with a billion and its perfect. Never find the need to powercycle it and when it does drop it comes back all by itself.

I powercycled it last night, the first time in a very long time since the internet was dead, but it wasnt the router, it was the ISP.

Sounds like you got a dud. I had mine downloading almost everything off files.recoil.net (lol) for a couple of days (only paused for me to play halo)

The thing got rather hot, but didn't drop or crash. However, the control panel does get rather iffy when the unit heats up.

I have found Draytek to be reliable, when I was in the UK in 2004, Draytek routers seemed to be the router of choice if you wanted good features and reliability.

Personally I have a Draytek 2800VG, and it hasn’t missed a beat, apart from one niggle that was solved on this forum.

you could try upgrading/reloading the firmware. Ive had a Netgear D834G for over a year now, for the first 10months it ran smoothly very stable no problems, then after 10months it started developing problems with net slow downs after a period of time, a flash of the firmware fixes this. I had the same thing with my old ASUS Adsl modem (1 of the first) where a flash of the firmware fixed it. (it cost me $400 back in the day)

Thanks guys for all the feedback. Maybell I'll try the firmware flash as a last resort before going for a new modem/router. I thought the firmware was differnet in the Xnet version than the regular linksys firmware. Any ideas if I'll be ok with the linksys version? I do use VOIP but have a seperate 2102 for that.

There is a later version that is pushed out to the VFX configured devices 2.01.06, if you you wish I can send you a link to pickup the firmware

Mind you, I never thought I'll say this one day...

But I think that the "Dick Smith" routers are pretty reliable and stable. Me and quite a few friends, way back from the "Jetstream / Jetstart" days, we have used those routers for almost 7 years now! I do wonder who's the OEM?

I just wish they didn't make me want to kill myself! Ever tried to pinhole a big range of ports in one of these?

I agree with the comment about the Drayteks. After months / years of testing many different SME grade routers we have concluded the Drayteks are king. And PPPoE pass through mode is great - so your ethernet router / firewall can get the public IP.
