Is it at all possible to have a kind of 'alias' phone number on Vodafone.

Say if I ported my Telecom number to VF, could I have this as an 'alias' of my normal number, so I could still recieve texts and calls to either number, but only carry one phone?

You can have secondary numbers, but they are only available for data/fax/0800 services not for the situation you described.

My best recommendation would be a dualsim adapter, but you would need to have 2 live connections on seperate sim cards and they also don't run simultaneously - you have to switch between which sim card is active (it's like swapping sims but without having to take the battery out - only works on certain phones too I beleive)

If you port your number to another provider, your current connection will cease to exist and all calls, sms, and photo messages will go to your new provider.

You could forward calls to your existing number, or as Cranz suggested, run a dual SIM adapter.

I'm fully aware of how number porting works etc and I would only want 1 connection (Dual sim would just be a pain).

It would be good if you could have a secondary number on your account so that people like me with 2 connections could just have one, without having to loose one of the numbers. Sounds like it might be possible, but apparently not for the reason I have suggested (A Shame)

I have wanted this for ages so I dont have to carry 2 phones around.

Dont worry, there are loads of mobiles in china that take 2 sims that can have both active at once even on different networks - certainly looks to be the way to go. Dont see nokia or sonyericsson putting useful features like that in their handsets - probarbly dont want to anger their biggest customers, whereas chinamobile and cect dont have to worry about that.

How do these phones deal with outgoing calls? Do you specify for each voice call, SMS, data connection which SIM to use?

I have been fascinated by dual sim phones for ages. Such a pity most of them are cruddy touch-screen pda-wannabe things.

Just give me a normal phone!!! Or better still a high end genuine Nokia with dual sim...

There are other phones available. I think that the trademe sellers just bring in the PDA wannabe ones because of the higher percieved value in them = more profit on less units sold.

Have a look on http://www.glomarket.com/en/home.php (when its up) at the range of them - even a quad sim phone if you have that many girlfriends ;)

Or perhaps Vodafone can just let me have an alias number and they can have my Telecom business as well

Other then some nokias, what handsets support line 2 operation however?

Unless there is a way to set which number you are calling out or texting from then its largly useless since people will get the other number when you call them back

I got to play with a Dual sim CDMA/GSM model the other day, REALLY nice phone, you simply selected your "default" preferred network to call automatically or you could simply press options and "send by GSM" or "send by CDMA"
looks like an ericsson t610 phone with a razr keypad and while an obvious copy, it works very well.

If ONLY I could get this connected to Telecom!

I want to buy a Dual sim phone but unless I see one in the plastic (flesh) i'm not going to part with my money.
needs to be slimmish with a reasonably usable keypad, if anyone knows of which are the better models I'd appreciate the help.

Thats fine, one outgoing number is ideal as long as I don't miss anything coming in.

One number outgoing is not alright for me, so the multi sim phones make perfect sense rather then carrying 2 phones around. The only downside is one sim disappearing when the other is in use so callers get a massive delay before the call goes to voicemail, like when you yank the battery vs turning the phone off.

Does Vodafone have dual line sims?  All calls come in okay.  With Nokia, you just press hash until it changes over to line one/two, or asks you if you want to change to the other line, and you say yes.  Can't remember how to do it with Sony Ericcsons, just know that it was quite common for customers to be on line two and not understand why they couldn't call out...  I'm half asleep, so I still don't understand why you want two numbers...

No dual numbers from vodafone.

Want more then one number so one can be off and not bothering me while select people can call on the other one, and also since I have the home phone fowarded to the cell a lot, I want to know if I am paying for the call or the caller is. Many times I have yacked on for 20-30 mins only to find later they had called me at home... Oops.

I currently have two phone and two numbers, one on Telecom and one on Vodafone. Ideally I would like to only have one connection, but dont want to loose one number as I have had my Telecom number forever and alot of people have it. Dont want to miss any incoming texts or calls
