I am trying to setup the Huawei HG659 to allow the use of a Vodafone Mobile Broadband USB stick K5150 for a client. The K150 is a backup if the primary broadband connection goes down. So if the broadband connection fails, the K5150 kicks in and the HG659 uses the 4G connection.

On Spark they have instructions to do this for a 3G dongle that edits the Internet settings via 'INTERNET_UMTS'.

With in the internet section, I do not have 'INTERNET_UMTS' section/option (with the dongle plugged into one of the usb ports). Do I need to do something?

My client was given both HG659 & K5150 by vodafone for this purpose but cannot locate any instructions. Please help.

The team have told us for starters you'll need to have firmware version 20 on the HG659 http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/24400/

We're waiting on a couple of other details, will hopefully have some more info this afternoon.

 Thanks Dylanp,

The firmware upgrade resulted in the 'USB_Vodem' option appearing in the Internet settings.

Will wait to see what further instructions come back pertaining to final failover setup for Vodafone.

I have a regular prepaid sim in it, would this have any affect?

Good to hear that settings has appeared for you. No, the type of sim won't make a difference at this stage. It's a different issue at the moment, but assuming you have On Account mobile with Vodafone you may want to use a shared data sim. Of course we should get the connection up and working first. :)

Further to this, my client want to keep their current router/modem and attach the Huawei with the 3g/4g failover to it.

My plan is to turn-off DCHP on the Huawei and attach it to the current router via the Huawei's WAN port. Will this work?

No that won't work. You can't turn off DHCP and then connect to another router via WAN - what would do the DHCP?

Using 2 routers is always a bad idea anyway - it typically introduces double NAT.

Would setting the Huawei up in bridge mode solve and leave DHCP as is.

The thing is that the Huawei will have a 4g Vodem and business requires that failsafe of 4G for their EFTPOS system (incase that their phone line is cut).

Would it be as simple as plugging the Huawei into the current router via its WAN port? Leave everything on the Huawei at defaults except for the Internet_UMTS settings for the 4g failover?

Cheers,

Hi, any update on this?

We've currently got no internet because our fibre was meant to be working a week ago and we had to give old IPS notice to disconnect, Vodafone is waiting on Chrous to fix something blah blah. I have a HG659 and a Vodem (K3765-Z). The HG659 user guide on the Vodafone site says the USB ports are for storage and printer, but this thread and another suggests it's possible to use a Vodem with it. It's running V100R001C206B020, and has Internet\Internet Settings\USB_Vodem (access UTSM, disconnected) and Maintain\System Information\UTMS Information (no data card), I've tried the vodem in both USB ports, maybe it's just too old. Keen for the instructions though, Cheers.

What I would suggest first of all is that you try the vodem in a pc or laptop first to see if you can actually get it connected to the internet first. If its prepaid, make sure that it has a valid mobile data sim (I have been trying by using a normal phone sim not realising the difference) with credit on it.

If you can get an internet connection with it then its a matter of just plugging it into the router and follow the instructions above. The Spark settings in the Internet Settings are the same for vodafone (confirmed them with Voadafone support on Friday).

So try that. In my situation, its still a work in progress as Vodafone are sending out a mobile broadband sim which should of been provided at the beginning.

The vodem works.

The link above didn't work, but this does "http://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet-data/equipment/huawei/hg659-gateway/connect-via-3g-dongle-huawei-hg659-hg659b/" (connect not connection).
I get to step 4 "Scroll down and find INTERNET_UMTS", I don't have that, I have "USB_Vodem" but there is no edit option. I've logged in with vodafone\Vodafone maybe that's not a full admin account.
Oh well, doesn't matter, it's an oncall Vodem for work, so should really be using it much unless I need to.

Try this link provided by dylanp and you need to be logged in as admin for the internet_umts edit feature.

AFAIK vodem support is added in version 20 of the firmware. Here's the link and the steps -

http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/24400/

Admin password details:

http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/24560

"Enter the username Admin and the password "@"and the last eight digits of your modem serial number. E.g. if your modem serial number is ABC0987654321 your password will be @87654321"

Hi, I logged in with the admin account, updated the USB_Vodem settings to match what is on the Spark page, but no luck.

In the settings it says: PIN status: Please insert a SIM card

Under USB_Vodem is says:
Access type: UMTS
IPv4 status: Disconnected

And under Maintain it says:
UMTS Information
No data card available

So maybe the SIM is my problem too, oh well, thanks for the help.
